Yes , and it does a good job. Shot/ball/ buck and ball and dont forget BAYONET!! a smoothbore is nearly endless in its adaptability and a Bess just seems to do it all well.

Cheers!

I surprised a bunch of people with my Bess last year. We were shooting at clay birds and they had a loading bench set up with dippers for the shot. I always use a balanced load when shooting shot, which means that I use the same measure for powder or shot. I was shooting 90 grains of powder so I normally would use the same measure for the shot. They had an approved shot dipper that they said threw the right amount of shot for a 12 gauge. I used it once and didn't hit a thing. I looked at the dipper and found that it took three dippers to fill my powder measure. When I loaded the Bess with 90 grains of shot I started hitting everything. I told them I didn't care what the book said, the point was to put a cloud of shot out there to hit something.

One of these days I'm going to have to shoot this load at cardboard to see how it patterns.

Yes,
One of the great things about smoothbores is the variety of projectiles that you can run through them.
With my smoothies, I regularly shoot ball, birdshot, and buckshot.
I too find that a balanced load is better when shooting shot. Lighter loads do not pattern well.
