I am not a huge fan of fowlers, though they are growing on me, and I got the book Flintlock Fowlers from the library and studied it a lot.

I have ordered a LH Jim Chambers Pennsylvania Fowler kit in 20 as my second build now that I am almost done w my TVM Lancaster.

I held the Chambers Penn fowler at Friendship ML shoot and liked it quite a lot. Expect to use it mostly for shot so my concern about cheek slap is probably much to do about nothing.

This thread of smoothbore pics was very helpful.

Guess I am a late comer to this page.

12 ga. Navy Arms (Pietta) double flint converted from percussion, jug choked modified and improved cylinder.




My go to gun, 20 ga. French Fusil fin. I have taken bear, deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel, quail, chukar, duck, and woodchuck with this gun.

I will give this thread a fresh bump in 10-12 days. I am having Joe Schell restock my 12 ga smoothbore that I call "Achilles". I never did like the job I did on building it though it felt an shot good so I hunted with it killing several longbeards. Then last spring I was hunting with it an fell on it breaking the wrist. I was sick for a while but after much thought an talking with Joe I just sent him the barrel an lock an told him to make me an iron mounted smoothrifle out of it. He should be done with it this week an ship it. I will post some pics when I get it

This thread needs to be kept going. I've posted mine before but some others have as well (excellent). I just love "gun porn". Once again this .62 (20ga) American smoothbore, 38" with both front and rear sight.



A 10 shot group with .600" ball and .012" patches. Group is at 50 yards with 8 shots forming a tight cluster. But notice the two wild fliers. Prb in this gun usually gives these wild fliers, messing up an otherwise fine group. My "bare ball" load doesn't group this tight but is more consistent and without wild fliers. I prefer 4" to even 6" centered groups at 50 yards to the inconsistent groups of the prb. Maybe I'll change my mind at some point but it will require more testing.

I could have sworn I replied earlier but I guess not... My 62/20 Caywood fowler with a 42" barrel, jug choked to modified. Those two reds thought they were safe at a little over 25 yards but an ounce of 6's proved them wrong!

I can't post a finished smoothbore pic for quite some time. Just starting my second build and my first smoothbore . . . inletting the lock and barrel on this Jim Chambers Penn Fowler in 20g and LH.

Here's my turkey gun. Joe Schell gave it a southern iron mounted look after a slight mishap last turkey season (Fat redneck falls on wrist of gun. Results GUN DIES) but Joe got me fixed up just in time for this turkey season. 12 ga oct to round 32 inch jug choked barrel. Chambers round faced english lock. Curly maple stock the rest is all Joes forge work
