Just got a flint smoothbore Manton style pistol. No Load info. Any recommendations?
Appreciate any help!

You didn't mention caliber...My rule of thumb is
half the caliber in grains for a pistol and the
same as the caliber for a rifle and then work up
or down to suit...I made a 62 cal Miquelet pistol
and use 30 grains ffg..Paper catridge or patched
ball...it works beautiful. There is your start..

I load a .595 ball over 30 grains of ffg. I patch with .015 material. I've loaded a 3/4 ounce charge of #7 shot over the same powder charge and figure it might take a rabbit at 10-15 yards or so. The pistol is a flint lock with a 12" barrel.

Start with a .435 round ball, and .010 to 015 patching, lubed, of course, in front of 20 grains of FFFg for a start. YOu can take that up to 40 grains, but the recoil becomes noticable and there is very little reason to use such a load, unless you enjoy seeing lots of muzzle flash. I think you will enjoy shooting the pistol with loads between 20 and 30 grains.

Right, 20 grs, same as for a rifled barrel, will
be plenty for a .45. .440 ball should also work.
At a rondy Saturday, the 1st shot of the pistol
shoot was 1/2 of an oxygen cylinder at just over 100 yds. when I hit it with a .440 ball and 20 grs of 3ff it rang like a church bell.
Last week I saw a double barreled smoothbore .45 pistol. I'm hoping to talk the owner into selling it.
