i just had a co-worker come by to have me look at a bunch of muzzleloading stuff he was given in return for a debt that was owed to him. its all stuff from the 80s.

1. 25 50 cal lead round balls in a CVA packaging. (they dont look very useable.
2. 4 assorted hand files
3. a cheap 3 piece small file set
4. a 5 piece wood carving set
5. one pound of very old but unopened can of pyrodex RS.
6. an unopened birchwood casey muzzle loaders barrel and stock finishing kit. the plum brown barrel finish has gone bad but it has tru-oil, degreaser, colonial red stain, and assorted abrasive supplies.
7. a CVA single-shot shooters kit (new). this is complete with short starter, patch grease, patches, powder measure, powder flask, cap dispencer, and even a tin of 100 CVA #11 caps.
8. a CVA 45 cal Colonial caplock pistol kit, this kit is complete with all parts and instructions. it doesnt appear to have been worked on.

i told the guy i wasnt really interested but he insisted he had tried to sell it on craigslist and had no luck. i tried to tell him about this forum and that he could sell it here, but he still wasnt interested. so... i gave him $60 for it and he seemed happy.

so how did i do?

You did good.
If he has more stuff to sell at that price...send him my way.

Need you ask, you lucky rascal? You just want to brag......and rightly so. Go ahead and strut. :hatsoff:

I think the can of pyrodex is probably dust by now, As to the round balls just melt them down an recast. The caps MIGHT be good, but I would think after this time they may be history. A  on the other stuff.

You done great

Like others have said, I`d think the pyrodex is probably not much good anymore. As for the CVA caps, those things weren`t much good even when they were new. The ones I had a time or two never seemed very hot. They also like to stick onto the nipple after firing and need to be pryed off with a knife blade or something.

I built one of those Colonial Pistol kits back when I was in high school. I`ve still got the thing around here somewhere. Sounds like you have yourself a winter project.

I'd use the caps to clear and prepare the barrel/rifle for shooting. Even if they are weak they should be good enough for that.

If the pyrodex is still sealed, it should still be good as long as it was stored proper. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try. I never cared for the CVA caps years ago. The ones I had were in a thick brass cup and I would have to pry them off the nipple but it could have been a bad nipple. Long time ago I just remember the other caps worked fine. They did go off fine though. Wouldn't hurt to try them also. Those should still be good too as long as stored good. You got a very good deal.
The RBs could be cleaned up and used but if you cast it would be easier just to recast them.

I would be MOST interested in your results with that "old" pyrodex... PLEASE post results!!

You did good. Open that Pyrodex can and see if the powder is till good.

I never find those deals.

I have and still use Both P/RS Pyrodex that is open and going on 6 years old..properly stored in the wooden foot locked at the foot of my bed,in the original containers, some in prelaoders. I'll let you know when/if I have the first hang fire!!!!!!
Load it,shoot it at the range if in doubt???Youst for funnies!!!!!

the caps look cheap to say the least, they arent all the same length and some are almost too short to use. but what the heck, if they even kinda work it will turn out allright.

the pryrodex is at least 20 years old! i cant seem to find a date on it but the price tag still has what could be a date which would mean it sold in 1992. i dont really care for pyrodex so im not sure what ill do with it. (its to bad you dont live closer cynthia, id give it to you)

the shooters kit has some usefull stuff in it (other then the caps). i will probably hang onto this.

the colonial pistol kit will probably go up for sale as i need another caplock pistol like i need a 3rd leg. if onley it was a flintlock... any ideas on a fair price for the pistol kit? i have verified all parts are there and other then some very light service rust on the ramrod and barrel the kit looks new. the kit has all the original paperwork in it including instructions, a slip of paper for requestiing missing parts, and operation instructions. there are a couple damaged spots on the instruction paper but its still useable.

edit: an interesting note, the gun kit and the shooters kit look about the same age (shooters kit might be newer). the shooters kit does have a copyright date on placing it around 1984.

$50
Got one in a package deal at a pawn shop last winter.
The guy wanted 125 for a rifle and we settled at 150 if he tossed in the pistol (assembled but not finished aka; in the white). He wanted 100 for the pistol alone until I showed(explained to) him it wasn't stainless steel.
Always figured I could get 50 for it either here or at a `vous easy enough,,

Kinda neat being the go-to guy for muzzleloader stuff ain't it?

There is likely nothing wrong with the balls except taht they probably have a coating of oxide on them. It will not hurt anything and the balls will work just fine. If you want, you can roll them between a couple of pieces of rough cloth such as canvas to rub off any loose oxide and make them look a bit better.

when i say they are unusable, i mean they are flattened, oblong, and generally very ugly. they will be melted down and recast into useable projectiles. lead never goes to waste around this house.

If we were closer. I'd take the pyrodex off your hand just to do some test loads. Speaking of that I haven't shot mine for a long time and I should get out and shoot it to see how it does but I did fire some a couple years ago and din't notice any difference. I haven't bought any in at least 10 years.
