Sitting on the front porch, talking with my dad, I saw the neighbor’s cat come out of the trees and start walking towards us, down the road. I commented, WOW…that cat has really gotten big.
Wasn’t the neighbor’s cat
…it was a bobcat.
It came over, laid in the grass by us, and I was able to get a couple pictures of it, before it moved on. We saw the bobcat for 3 years in my childhood neighborhood. The first year, it was just her…I know it was a “her”, because she told me her “pronouns”…and she had 2 kittens each of the following 2 years. I think the lower image is of one of the kittens…
My dad still teases me about confusing the neighbor’s cat for a bobcat. He loves to tell that story…
A Coopers Hawk nested up across the road this year. I went to see my dad, pick him up to go shooting. The young hatchlings were hanging out in the fence
The apple tree had an over abundance of apples last fall. I took them and piled them into my dad’s garden to compost over the winter. Guess what?…Elk like apples.
Been a nice time living here…

Yeah, I’ve often wondered in what world FeltWad lives in…certainly not mine.
Few years ago, I took my wife up to a little town in Wyoming. I love this place…this guy followed us on a walk to breakfast one morning.
This doe brought her fawns every evening to hang out for a couple hours.

The people on this site, that know me, know that I have a special fondness for elk. I’ve hunted them for many years. I’ve loved this game animal. And I enjoy them very much.
The elk population along the Colorado FrontRange is very healthy…and growing. This is from the driveway to my inlaw’s cabin. I was once doing dishes after dinner and looked up to see an elk looking in through the window…I think I jumped 10 feet. Wasn’t expecting to see an elk 18 inches from my face…
I find them in neighbor’s backyards, walking down my childhood street…
…my wife’s parents have a cabin up in Estes Park…you want to see elk, year round…spend a weekend in Estes. If don’t see any elk it’s because you aren’t looking… or they’ve left the state.

My fondest memories of elk…are the ones from hunting them…not many pictures, sorry. But I’ve gotten really close to a lot of really huge elk. I’ve had them sniff me, spit on me…one pooped on me, I scared it pretty bad when it reached its neck out to sniff me. Kind of like @hanshi and his experiences with percussion muzzleloaders setting his lap on fire…
If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time around elk, it doesn’t take much time to realize that they are a beautiful majestic animal. Wonderful to watch and observe, incredible to stalk and hunt.

In early June, this year, we had a visitor. It hung out in the cottonwood tree in the backyard most of the day.
Later in the day it saw a Garter Snake moving through the grass.
My 4 lb cat immediately went out and tried to pick a fight with it.
The owl is trying to finish his snake, my cat’s trying to get the owl, I’m trying to take a picture & keep the cat from being the 2nd course.
I finally had an idea; lock up the cat in the house, and move the owl off the ground.
Owl hung around for a few days, nabbing Eurasian Doves off the bird feeder
…and we still have the cat.

I had one nesting in my deer blind 2 years ago.
Went out hunting rabbits tonight,and ended up filming the world's most chilled echidna. Unfortunately the video is too big to post so I took some screenshots

Rock Home Isle, as soon as you get to take some pictures of wolves, you can kiss seeing elk good bye. *******s have taken a huge toll on the elk up here in Idaho.

Looks like a porcupine to me.
Do they raise their spine when feeling threatened?
You describe this one as "chilled" are they normally very active? Our porcupines move like a fat midget, but if threatened stiffen their spines up and if a threat get close enough will slap the threat with their tail embedding spines in the aggressor. Mostly a mellow waddling animal though.
When threatened they usually burrow straight down leaving only the quills exposed,and if you touch them they curl their body in toward the touch to try to impale you. They are usually quite on the ball to any sounds or smells and ready to sink into the ground at the slightest hint of trouble,but this one didn't show any concern whatsoever, even when I poked him with the tip of my bow.
