Is anyone from Indiana or Ohio going to the Southeastern in NC by way of I-77?
The reason I ask is that I would like to get a picture of myself, in costume, at an easily accessible spot on the old route of the Appalachian Trail and I need someone to take it. It would be on the homeward bound leg, which, in my case, will be Friday the 26th.
The location is Monster Rock, located a short distance from Big Walker Mountain Lookout on US 52 between Bland, VA and Wytheville, VA.
The reason the AT was moved off Walker Mountain is that water was, for the most part, unavailable. When I hiked through the area in 1975, the group I was with had formulated a plan where we would hit a restaurant supposedly a half mile past the Monster Rock shelter, have dinner, fill our water bottles, and keep hiking north until near dark. As it turned out, the restaurant was a LOT closer than a half mile. We had the dinner, filled the water bottles, and returned to the shelter for the night.
Anyway, the photo-op will require leaving the interstate and traveling about twenty miles of two lane US 52 before returning to the interstate. The walk to the overlook is well worth it.

I'm going but not coming straight home. Leaving the SEPR a couple days early for the Old Virginia near Smithville, VA.
