No matter what I've tried I cannot get consistent spark what am I doing wrong?

Have you ever gotten good sparks when firing the rifle?

Is the frizzen too soft?

Is the flint dull?

Is the flint the correct size?

Is the flint correctly positioned in the jaws of the hammer?

I know the flint is a little long in the pic, but I think I figured out that it is the first gen thompson hammer which was problematic.

I would change flints, something sharper. Wipe the flint, and frizzen down with alcohol or brake parts cleaner.

The flint does appear to have no edge!
Is this correct?
Have you chipped a fresh edge to the flint?
It should cut skin. It should feel like a knife edge.

It looks like it is hitting the frizzen at an almost 90 degree angle, it actually needs to scrape down the face of the frizzen.

As Britsmoothy says, make sure it is very sharp and turn the flint over.

It looks to me like your flint is the problem. Wrong size, wrong angle, not sharp.

A while back I was checking the spark on my Early Plains Rifle. Shot a quick 9 second video, went back and looked it over frame by frame. Picked two and made images

Use lower light conditions, so you will see the sparks better, and shoot from the side

Try different orientations of the flint, check that the flint is square with the frizzen and the edge is sharp.

If you have everything as it should be, and still no speaking…You may need to re-harden your frizzen…or try to locate a new frizzen for that make/model of lock

Looks like it hits the frizzen about 3/4 the way down. I concur, reverse the rock.

Just wipe the frizzen and flint (to and bottom) with your thumb or a cloth... Every shot. A good muzzleloading gunsmith is worth their weight in gold.

If you want to end the chase of a good spark forever get an L&R RPL lock for that gun and it will spark like crazy

Your flint sure don't look sharp more like a squared front edge. That will never work.
