I have only been hunting blackpodwer or any type for two years. Here in ALabama we have two muzzleloading seasons. On the last ml day in Nov. I shot at a big doe from 50 yards with my .50 CVA Hawken. It was raining, I was in a shooting house. I thought I hit her, but there was so much smoke in that house I couldn't see for a long time. I could not find any sign of her. No blood, hair, ect. I looked for 3 hrs. I must have missed her.
Luckily, I did get a spike two weeks ago with my .270. It was my first kill ever. We have another 12 days of muzzleloading hunting down here from the 8th to the 20th. I hope to still make meat with my Hawken.

Lost too

You know you can use your muzzle loader all season here in Alabama have hunted with nothing else this year. However I haven't scored either. I shot one last Wed. just before dark ,but we could not find her. Blood trail stopped after about ten yards. Had it been daylight I am sure I could have found her. I don't think I will take a shoot that late in the day again. I hate to think of her being coyote bate!
Old Charlie

charlie,
did you look the next morning??? i have lost more than one at the end of the day, gone back and found them

Old Charlie,
I see you're from Jasper. I live near Winfield and I teach at Curry. We're almost neighbors. I think I am going stick with the Hawken the rest of this seaon.

Hang in there. I went for the first time in Alabama last weekend. I live in Leeds. I did manage to shoot at a coyote. Don't know if I hit it or not. It was just light enough that I could see my sights and the coyote, but that is about it. It was moving and I didn't hear it stop, so I may have missed. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to go look for it and I haven't been back. It will make my mother-in-law happy if I get one. She had her chicken coup cleaned out by coyotes.... 15 or so chickens at one time.

Where do you hunt? I hunt on my mother-in-law's farm near Pell City. I haven't seen any deer out there. I have been twice and seen one coyote each time. The funny thing about it is I have a patch of woods in my back yard inside the Leeds City limits and I have went out there just to practice with the deer call and saw 3. One side of the woods backs up to a golf course and I could actually see golfers from the same point that I saw the deer. Tempting to go back there bow hunting, but it may be against the law. Not sure what the city laws are. I'm not sure how big the patch of woods is. My guess would be at least 5 acres, but I haven't been all over it yet, so I don't know how far it really goes.

Good luck with the Hawkin! I use a .58 Mississippi rifle myself. Love that gun!
