building a .32 sqirrel gun with walnut stock I plan to use walnut stain first, ( because I bought a flint pistol once that way), and it was nice). What I want is that appearance of depth to the finish. Prehaps tong oil or danish oil.
Any favorite methods out there?

Oliver, go to Chambers website and look for his oil finish. Buy a can you’ll like it.

Looks real good on unstained or stained walnut. It has a slight red tone to it, it’s the only finish I use any more.

This is low gloss tung oil finish with a black grain filler.

Packdog, I swore I would never inlet another lollypop tang. Yours looks great.

In my opinion Walnut seldom requires the use of any stain.

I suggest that before you stain your Walnut stock you take it outside into the sunlight.
Use a wet washrag to wet the wood and take a good look at it. What you see is exactly what it will look like without the use of any stain but with an oil finish on it.
Walnut is much lighter when it is unfinished and dry.

Usually staining Walnut will cover the interesting grain patterns in the wood and result in a plain drab dark brown look.
