Many thanks for the info regarding stains. I am
leaning towards the Honey Maple or Lancaster Maple.

As my stock was partially pre-carved (barrel channel
and ramrod inletted), I don't have much in the way
of scrap wood on which to run tests.

From left: Laurel Mountain Forge Lancaster Maple with tung oil finish. 2: Green River Leman trade rifle with chromic acid and linseed oil, I guess- built it in 1978, don't remember. 3: Pecatonica River's Beck Boys rifle, Homer Dangler golden brown stain, tung oil. 4: Jacob Wigle (Westmoreland Co, PA) copy of museum rifle, LMF's Lancaster Honey Maple, tung oil. 5: Thomas Oldham Bedford, aquafortis and tung oil. 6: Henry Albright Lancaster. If you can't decide on stain, keep adding it. This has aqua fortis (which should be a stain by itself)- but then Birchwood Casey colonial red stain and Fiebing's dark brown oil leather dye. Tung oil. Standing on a flitch of Vernal walnut that I'll make into a rifle someday-

A closer look at the warmed over Hawken, and my Leman.

And here's another Hawken with aqua fortis and Birchwood Casey walnut and tung oil.

And another one with aquafortis and Fiebing's dark brown leather dye. Tung oil. Killed a mule deer this past fall.

I got a couple more Hawkens, but that's enough for today. So, Snarf, you got options. Ciotog, this shows Lancaster maple compared to others. Hope it helps you both.

I really like the looks of the aqua fortis. I guess that is the way I will go. All I have to do now is aquire some.
