Those are nice woven straps, Brett.

I rely on my wife, who crochets them and felts them. Also comes out nice, although you have more elaborate patterns than she's done.

Brett Sr, can you email me those instructions? thanks.

those are some great looking straps.

Yep! and the best is when they are still green. Throw them in a kettle of water when green and let them soak until the walnut comes out or you can just boil them until the walnut comes out. The blackened rotten ones work but while green they still have ALL the acid in them. Stronger dye. It isn't the brown in walnut hulls that dyes leather, it's the tannic acid and the green ones have more in them than the old rotten ones.

GoldHunter, since you sent me your double pouch plans, YOU can certainly have anything I have on the card weaving! Thats how it works here!

let me know if they come across on email, most are able to open them, some ISP's have blockers due to the pictures I guess.

everyone else....if I have an email, they be acomin'

Thanks Cooner, that's one of those counter-intuitive things you can only learn from a hivernant. Makes me wonder how well that store bought walnut powder is gonna work.

hope everyone that wanted the printed matter has responded, I will let this thread peter out into the mix.

All ofyou that showed an interest....Thanks for your comments and success to youand weaving!

PT me if you get stuck.

northwest journal web page has several good articals on finger weaving various sashes witch could be easilly scalled down to straps as well....

Here are a few that I have made on my inkle loom.
Most materials are wool or cotton yarn. I usualy add braintan end tabs, and thongs for attaching to my horns, or sew the leather ends directly to a bag.

Brett sr...7days.

Your guy's straps look great. Brett, Sr. I sent email for instructions. been off the www for awhile...trying to catch up on my informative reading.

What type of yarn/thread do you recommend?
Knitting yarn, crochet thread?

Best place to get it? I have WalMart and JoAnn fabrics in my area.

walmart and joanne's work out fine. color selection is hit and miss.I buy a cotton product usually made by "Lily", but have found a few others. I like cotton, wool is good but can fuzz up in the process. acrylic yarn works fair but has a lot of stretch and some fuzz. incidently, the bag I made sports my one and only acrylic strap just because.
the lily yarn is typicly used by"seasoned" ladies to knit/crochet pot holders. 1 hank, 1 7x7 pot holder!
instructions should be in your mailbox!

enjoy!

Do card-woven straps stay flat when stretched, or do they roll over? I bought a sash at a rondy this summer, and the weaver warned me that inkle-woven sashes would roll over when stretched, but that his were woven in such a way that would stay flat. But I can't remember what technique he used. Maybe card weaving?

Don

all of the ones I have made up stay flat. I have a belt pouch and knife on one that I wear as a sash and it stays flat. the ones I have put on bags as well.
I use cotton to minimize stretch and I think that helps. Acrylic hasa lot of stretch and probly some memory as well.
I would think that too much tension on the warp thread would cause the roll.

I have never had any problems with "rolling over". This is the first time i have ever heard of such a thing.
I would guess that yarn type, might have something to do with it. Like the old saying "you get what you pay for". The higher quality yarn, always make a nicer product.

I love "combed cotton". It is smooth, strong and weaves like soft butter. Good wool is great too. Sometimes the wool is tough to get going on the loom, but it finishes nice, and has allot of character.

The stores that sell upholstery supplies have a brown woven "hemp" strapping that they sell for straps under the pillows. The strapping is pretty cheap and lasts a long time. It's about as PC as you need for most purposes.

Many Klatch
