You can see in the above photo that Cherry shares the triggerguard birthing pains that Smallpatch was experiencing. It's a tough job to bring all the curves of a Lehigh into agreement. John assures me this is just a phase she's going through. Much aligning and file work yet ahead.

Very Nice, bet you can't wait for first shot :shocking:
Keep updating the pictures. I like to see fine craftsmen at work.

Don't wear a path to the mailbox yet. It won't be home for quite awhile. Looks good though. :redthumb:

very nice work done so far....now i can't wait to start my rifle after seeing this and rootnukes rifle................bob

very pleased to see how you rough shaped that blank then let the buttplate do the talking. fewer and fewer people are scratch-building anymore and yet it's the most rewarding.

Stuump I bet you deaming sweet dreams of Miss Cherry at night :)
Looking mighty good at this stage of the work.. like he said lot more fileing and sanding and fine tuneing but I am sure the next pics will show all the line comeing together. Don't worry Be Happy!

Congrats Stumpy

I wish I could take credit for her. John Donelson is doing the work. I'm just doing the whining and pacing. I suppose I should have placed this in the Photos section, but it is a gun in the building stage.

John promised that if I only called him twice a day he would send photos and updates. :haha:

Per John:

The barrel, or more accurately, the breech face determines where the lock pan should go (within a 1/8" zone in front of face), the lock sear determines where the trigger should go, the trigger determines where the guard should go, the trigger also determines how far back the butplate should go (pull length). Only when all these are in place can serious wood removal be started.

It's coming along pretty fast! and shaping up to look good. Did he do that much work in a week and a 1/2. wow! At a pace like this it will be done soon.
Lehigh..

Stumpy,

Tell John , "Great Work" so far, I am sure the gun will hit a rotten stump, once he gets done.

Save your pesos, though, as a Lehigh is one the harder guns to make.

Hey, it needs some wire inlay too!!!! But that's your call.

Never had a "cherry", myself, so am envious.

Congrats, and keep pacing the floor,
Terry

God get me one good shot at Grant

It was a easy choice but a tough decision, which makes no sense. :youcrazy: I badly wanted a Lehigh, and I wanted an "authentic" one. John suggested this particular piece (the pages in some of the images are from a Kindig book). It's not heavily ornamented, which allows me to afford it. It's also not cherry or iron mounted (or rifled ::), but those features appeal to me and contemporary examples exist, so what the heck.

I'm just waiting for someone to fish the "lost" Pre-Revolutionary era cherry stocked w/iron furniture John Rupp (Herman's father, not the grandson) out of a well to validate my decision. Not my fault the archeologists are inept.

What's the Mrs. say about this other woman?

She says it's still cheaper than a Harley, BMW Z8 or mistress needing support.

Does he have a large window in an adjoining room so you can look in as you pace back and forth while chain smoking cigarettes? Have you and the Mrs. picked out a name yet? :haha: :: :relax:

Have you and the Mrs. picked out a name yet?

Ye can't officially name a gun until ye've killed with it. We're going with "Cherry" as a birth name. :winking:

THE ADMIRAL has the George Foreman solution to naming my guns. They're all: "That D*mned Gun".

"You care about T.D.G. more than me!"

"Get T.D.G. out of the kitchen!"

"You're not sleeping with T.D.G. in the bed!"

The good news is that she now calls them all by the same name, so I figure she can't tell when I bring new ones home. :redthumb:
