Like the title says, stupid question BUT, do antler ball starters wear or damage the muzzle after a period of time?

I have always wondered if putting a little bit of ballistol on it would help? With the friction maybe? I have considered trying it on one of my wooden cleaning rods, but now that I have nicer ones with muzzle guards I haven't gotten around to fiddling with it.

I've been using them for years. Never been an issue. Semper Fi.

Antler is softer than metal. The bottom side of my antler is worn smooth in a circular pattern from hitting the muzzles of many rifles.

Mine never hurt the muzzle. I think the antler would give out before any steel was damaged.

I have made tons (well....almost) of short starters with antler and hickory rod. Work fine, last and never any damage. You like the idea? Go fer it.
