Stick Man, I'll go with the consensus on this one. ... You could do a lot worse than a Lyman in .54 percussion. If you really have your heart set on a .58, you might want to look into having the barrel rebored to the larger caliber.

for details, bobby hoyt reigns supreme. 3 barrels done. if unsafe safe to rebore he will give you alternities Robert Hoyt at the Freischutz Shop, 700 Fairfield Station Rd., Fairfield, Pa. 17320. His phone # 717-642-6696 ...

One guy's advice: free and no doubt well worth the price.

Can't happen, and Hoyt will confirm. The barrel of the GPR is 15/16" across the flats, and the minimum for reboring to 58 caliber is 1".

It doesn't please me at all to report that, because if it was possible I'd have had it done long ago. The Cabela/Investarms versions with 15/16" 58 caliber barrels predate liability lawsuits. Best answer is to search out one of the old ones, or be happy with 54 caliber. As noted many times here, there are good reasons to be happy with 54 caliber. Of course, there are very good reasons to be happy if you stumble across on of the old 58's! :applause:

Have a look at Pecatonica River Long Rifle Supply. Some nice combinations there. Maybe a Leman?

I have 15/16 proof tested 12 ga toledo TC drop in barrel, and a 62 cal Lyman/Investarms 15/16.

And my 15/16 58 cal Lyman has been spitting 525gr Hornady GP bullets with 90 gr FFG since the 70s. That load might even work on your Brownies.

Good on ya. Now tell him where he can find his own, much less have them built if he can't find them for sale.

As for brownies with a muzzleloader, that road has been thoroughly discussed before.

From my own shooting of the GP, 90 grains of 2f is pretty mild. My various 58's don't turn into serious hunting guns trajectory-wise till they pass 120 grains. With the arcing trajectory of the GP at only 90 grains, a guy might as well use round balls.
