Just added a pound of 777 to my Powder Valley order and wanted to know what loads I might use in .44 caliber handguns. Mainly for paper punching and plinking. Since it is supposed to pack more punch than Pyrodex and Black I assume you can use less of it. Only got 1 pound of fff. Maybe a waste of money for my intended use but I wanted to try it out.

On the other end of the spectrum, what would be a max or near max with 777 in an ROA?

I have an old army that I shoot in matches. My normal load has always been 20 grains of Goex 3F BP with 20 grains of cream of wheat over powder. I shot a bunch of triple 7 3F using the same load. The triple 7 is noticeably hotter than 3F and not near as accurate in my gun. I lowered the T7 charge to 15 grains and it does as well as 3F group wise. Ignition is good in my gun. You can’t fit enough BP or triple 7 in a Ruger and hurt anything other than your hand.

25g of 777 feels plenty hot in an 1858 clone. I would not hesitate to hunt with 25g. I would probably tone it down a bit from there if I was doing competition with a revolver.

I generally make no reduction in my loads with 777. It is close enough to black powder as to make little difference for the kind of shooting I do with it. That said, I never really approach maximum loads. Your mileage may vary.
