Hello from Germany!

After ordering a .54 poor boy from Roy I now plan to order a .62 poor boy from T.V.M. Do you have any loading suggestions and expiriences for/with that cal. I certainly talking of PRB loads.

Regards

Kirrmeister

Try loading a .600 RB, over 75 grains( 2 3/4 drams) of FFg powder. YOu can increase the load up to 90 grains but somewhere in that range, you will find an accurate load. This is still a 50-75 yard gun, since its a SMOOTHBORE. Over 90 grains, and recoil becomes a factor in some guns.

If you are actually ordering a .62 Caliber RIFLE, those same loads will hit well out to 125 yards, accurately. After that, the drop of the RB is so much that you will have to know the EXACT range to the target, and hold over appropriately. The Ball that size will kill at much longer ranges, of course. Its putting it on target that gets to be difficult, using open sights.

The deer hunting loads I tested and settled on for my Green Mountain .62cal Flint "smooth rifle" barrel, are as follows:

100grns Goex 2F (or: 80 or 90grns Goex 3F)
Oxyoke .018" precut/prelubed pillow ticking
.600" cast ball

These loads give me clover leafs at 50yds

The gun I have/will order is a rifle, so no smoothie. I'm planing it for roe deer hunt (like your elk). Therefore a big round ball is needed, so that the search for the deer not became a bavarian mountain crosscountry tour.

80 grains FFFg, .600 round ball and lubed pillow ticking patch is what my .62 cal rifle likes.

I also have an identical .62cal rifled barrel and use the same loads in it

For an elk size animal I'd go with 100 grains of FFg powder under a .600 ball and a .015 patch. This should be caple of cleanly taking the deer.

That is a little overkill. I friend of mine has taken several deer with 70 grains 3F and a .600
ball. That load drops them in their tracks.

Just a couple of thoughts...remember he's talking about Elk, not deer...and no discussion about distances. Me personally, I don't ever want to be in the situation where I'd be tempted to take "a shot too far" at an above average animal knowing I was using a target load.

80grns is the entry level powder charge for a .58cal, running up to 120grns...and that load data range would be at least the same for the larger volume bore of a .62cal if not more.
I settled on a mid range charge of 100grns 2F...its a powder puff to shoot, extremely accurate, and good for longer than normal ML distances on the really bigger game animals...

Kirrmeister,
If needed, don't you have a Drahthaar you can use to help you find game?

Correction: not roe, certainly red deer!!!

Ah! That had me wondering at first. Isn't the roe really small? I was wondering if they'd taken to wearing Kevlar, if it took a .62 to put one down reliably. :v

Red deer can be pretty big and heavy in Europe, once I had a friend rasing some red deer and one of the massive males was almost as tall as me from foot to head. I am 6'1 so I would rather use a .62 than a .50 on him.

A very kind animal, it ate the apples out of my hand inside the deer park and burped a lot while feeding it.

@ Hanz:

I have a hunting college whith a Foxterrier, he is the best searcher I have ever seen.

@ colmoultrie:

I think a .62 ball will be a kind of overkill for the little roes.

You are right with the cal. For elk ther minimum has to be a .54 with a stout load, especially durcing the soon starting copulation time, wheere the bucks are extremly hithard.

I'm glad you have the tracking end of things covered. Best of luck on your hunts.
