Hey guys I hope this hasn't been posted to many times. There is nowhere around here that sells black powder so I'm looking at getting together with a couple of guys and just ordering 25 or 50 pounds. Looking for suggestions on best online powder vendor.

Thanks guys

I have bought powder for quite a few places over the years. All were good places.

My current go to is Crater Fireworks out of IL.

I can simply pick it up on one of my trips.

10lbs or less Graf's and Sons, 10 pounds or more Powder Inc.

If memory serves, you can only have shipped 25lbs at a time with a 50lb limit at your residence. This is Federal and Florida law, other states may and probably will be different.

I've ordered cases of powder from Powder Inc and from Jack's Powder Keg; the product and service have been excellent. No experience with them but Crater Fireworks looks good.

Your idea is totally legal if you collect all of the money from each person before you place the order.

By doing this, you'r acting as their "agent" which basically says you are working in their behalf and not selling black powder to them.

If just one person doesn't pay up front and he gives you the money when you give him the powder you are "selling" it to him and breaking the Federal law dealing with selling explosives without a license.

Get the money first and your good to go.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Thanks for the tips on the legal portions as well. It will be between me a a couple of close friends so I don't think it should be a big deal. I've looked at powder Inc but I'll have to look at the other ones.

I am told that technically, if you take money and give powder - you’re distributing (selling).

Think about it... Taking your friends money, then going to get the drugs for him, is still "selling".

Nope, Zonie is quoting one of the actual rules for a multi person purchase.
Money is put together up-front and everyone's name should be on a piece of paper saying they intend to purchase powder.
Then there's reality, 3 friends get together in a garage someplace.

Having been questioned by agents from the BATFE over my 25 pound black powder orders, the ONLY answer to the question:"what did you do with the other 20 pounds of Black Powder" is: "I gave it to my friends for no recompense what ever." I explained that we all took turns ordering 25 pounds powder and distributing between additional club members for free. Last month was my turn. "I kept 5 pounds, and gave each of my four friends 5 pounds the same day it was delivered." That way there is no violation for transporting more than 5 pounds, and no violation for selling, trading, or accepting "in kind compensation" for the powder, making you a seller without a federal license and a State certified Magazine (if you store more than 5 pounds over night). Work together guys, this is not difficult!

Are you referencing some rule that limits you to 5 pounds in possession? From reading the ATF website I get that anything under 50 pounds is exempt as long as its for use in antique firearms for sporting use. I'm not sure if this statement exempts it from the storage requirement or not?

I don't know where you are in Wyoming, but Bear River Powder, [email protected] (E-mail), is in Evanston. Phone 307-679-0886. I buy powder from him at Fort Bridger Rendezvous. His name is Craig Kirkland, good to do business with.

I'm up in sheridan so that's a ways away. May have to send him an email and see if he does any shipping or see what his prices are.

I don't doubt anyone's word here. Can you point me to the ATF documentation for this procedure, so the Forum can provide a link?
