I don't know, but I'd say more like $600 to $800 on the online sites because you never see one for sale.

The basic .50 flintlock is going for over $300 on gunbroker right now.

I bought a minty one for $100.00 last month and I still cannot believe it.

What is the difference in the Big Boar and a White Mountain Carbine other than caliber? Do you know the ROT in the Big Boar?

Dan

Ranger,White mountain has a half octagon half round barrel that is much shorter than the Big Boar.White Mountain comes in .50 and .54 and the barrels have different twists.Big Boar has a 1 in 48 twist. Most used Big Boars are pushing $500+ and are hard to come by.

I have never seen one for less than $300, wait, I have never seen one for less than $350! :hmm:
They are very hard to find.

Other than the caliber it is a TC. You either like them or you don't. You better decide that before you lay the cash down.

There are something over half a dozen in my neighborhood because 58 has found a lot of favor here with big bears for neighbors. They've always been hard to find, and it's taken years for all of us to come up with them.

I see growing interest around the country in 58 cal in general, so I bet they're going to be even harder to find, as well as more and more expensive. They're just dandy guns and most guys who handle them want them, whether they "need" a 58 caliber at all. A factory 58 cal rifle that's so well made, performs so well and is so handy will hold it's value I think, when the custom alternative is so much more expensive. Heck, the kind of prices we're talking here is in the same realm as a Renegade with a GM drop-in barrel, and that's a good deal.

BrownBear,I also think we are going to see a swing back to the smaller calibers in the future. With the price of powder, lead going thru the roof like everything else,I see the .32,36,40,45's gaining even more popularity.I sure have fun target shooting and squirrel hunting with my .36 and it is relatively inexpensive. So the moral of the story is the most sought after and expensive TC,s are their smallest and largest calibers .32 .36 and .58's.

I picked one up two years ago for only $200 from a friend. It was NIB and yes I have broke it in and it is a honey to shoot. It likes PRB's, but will shoot conicals nicely. So far it likes the TC Maxihunters, but I am still testing for others.

The Renegade flinter I bought seems to spark vigorously, and with only TC agate flints. I play to hunt with it next year, PRB only.

Now I find myself wanting a second one, caplock.

If you run across some Hornady Great Plains, grab them. All the Big Boars around here really like them, but I'm pretty sure Hornady quit making the in the last year or so.

if i were out to save money i certainly wouldn't be playing with guns. in the grand scheme of my personal finance the savings by shooting small bores is virtually nothing.

I'm a fan of Great Plains Bullets, are they no longer made?

As I recall Hornady no longer lists the 58. Hope I'm wrong, but I laid by 10 boxes the moment the 58's disappeared from the Hornady site.

Bought mine a few months ago off of a gun auction on the internet. Paid $150 for it.
Shoots great with a lubed .015 patched.570 RB. 100 Gr. of BP with a wad between powder and patched ball.
Yes, they are getting really hard to find. Going to keep mine for my go to hunting rifle.

I came across a box of TC maxi balls in .58, I bought those. I'd like to one day be able to hunt elk with the .58....might need a conical.
