This weekend I saw a T/C halfstock flintlock rifle (used) for sale. It is .54 cal., barrel 29" long, don't know the twist rate, and was built from a kit. Appears to have been shot little if at all. No model number or name on barrel flat, only manufacturer, caliber, 'K' serial no., and customary "BP only" caveat. The flintlock Hawken on p. 37 of the current T/C on-line catalog appears identical but has a shorter barrel and is .50 cal.

What model is this? What's the selling price in kit?
(The dealer is asking $425).

How does this rifle compare to the Lyman GPR in flint, good shooter?

All comments and observations would be welcome. Thanks.

As one who has bought and owns several TC Hawken Flintlocks, the price is ridiculous, about what a brand new one would cost.

You can usually find mint condition TC Hawken Flintlocks on auctions in the $225-300 range

My 25 year T/C Anniversary .54 Hawken came with a 29 inch barrel, in kit form...

I wonder if those or all T/C kits come with a 29 inch barrel? :hmm:

I agree with Roundball. That price is way to high for a kit built TC. Does it have a brass patchbox and forend cap, if so, it is a Hawken model. If not, then it is very likely to be a Renegade. For the price that the dealer wants you could by a new rifle.

Thanks Magnumz and RB:

I suspected as much about the price. It does have a brass capbox in the buttstock and brass forend cap. I have been corresponding with Old Salt about building a Lyman GPR from a kit and will probably go thataway (after I finish my custom percussion competition target pistol).

Right...the standard 1:48" barrel is 28" + a breech plug, totaling 29"...and they only made kits with standard 1:48" barrels, not their longer 1:66" round ball barrels

RB:
Thanks for the tip about the 1:48" twist. Leaning more and more toward the GPR now.

I don't think you can go wrong with either the T/C Hawken, or the Lyman GPR, in my experience both are excellent shooters, I tend to like the T/C warranty better and the fact that it's American made, but like the GPR's barrel length and 1:60 twist. As far as quality, I don't see any big difference.

Stay away from the kit, no guarantee that whoever put it together didn't screw something up somewhere, and price is a joke.

Bluejacket:I pick up a Renegade flinter in 54 cal,was a kit gun, from a memeber on this board cost was $130.00 (never fired)

I picked up a beautiful Thompson Center .50 caliber Hawkins on one of the auction sites for $175.00 (if memory serves me) and then with a little advise from Roundball and a little free customer service from Thompson Center I have a beautiful rifle. Needless to say you could never get me to sell it for anywhere near that price.

Have you noticed a lot of the flintlocks come out of PA or Mississippi? Are they only flintlock season there?

PA has an early season that allows inlines. Our late season is after X-mas and is flintlock and open iron sights only. I like it that way. The woods aren't very crowded

Bluejacket,
The Kittery Trading Post has several used flintlock Hawkens and Renegades starting at $170. Check their website under used guns.
