I have never seen a factory .45 wth rifling like this, looks like shallow ratchet rifling. Could the RR mean that?Any idea why the serial number was struck over with the two Rs?
Could it be repair and return? In any case I can't see stamping over the original ser. no.Had to have been at the factory, I'm wondering, if tit was a Research Rifle, hence the RR in the serial #. T/C Hawkens were button rifled.

Google it, not truly ratchet, a lot of grooves.Ratchet rifling…learn something new every day here!
No : T/C did button rifling. An expert looked at the photos and he has never seen anything like it.Could it be repair and return? In any case I can't see stamping over the original ser. no.
Google is my friend when I see new-to-me terms! Now I kinda want to get a spare barrel with this for one of my modern unmentionables.Google it, not truly ratchet, a lot of grooves.

Looks like standard TC rifling. Here is an old photograph of a 50 caliber TC with different lighting (red) and exposure. Have your expert compare the two photographs. I’m sure if one were to play around with focus and lighting they could get the same optical illusion. No : T/C did button rifling. I agree. It looks like every TC Hawken barrel I've ever seen. It's just the effect caused by the reflections off of the rifling, nothing unusual.Looks like standard TC rifling.
