Anyone have any advice about a T/C White Mountain Carbine? Pros? Cons? My spouse likes shooting my black powder gun (T/C Hawken) but the gun is physically to big for her to handle comfortably. She only stands about 4’ 8” tall! Your thoughts?

They’re short light and handy. The trade off is recoil then becomes a factor. And being a fast twist you may or may not get roundballs to shoot well in it. The ones l’ve had shot maxi-balls and Lee reals very well.

I read somewhere that the patch thickness is key to getting round balls to shoot effectively (need to be tight). Also, read that light loads are better for the physical gun as the stock is known to crack (nothing more than 80gr.) Thoughts-real or imagined?

White Mountains have a lot of drop and the wrist is thin which causes a lot of flex with heavy loads. Another problem is if it’s ever beeen taken apart people tend to WAY overtighten the lock bolt. All of which can contribute to stock cracking.

Good information to know. Other “smaller” rifles that might be a better choice?

A Traditions Deerhunter with either a plastic or wood stock costs under $300, weighs about 6 pounds.
A Traditions Kentucky rifle has a shorter LOP and weighs 7 pounds, the kit costs a little over $300.
If money weren't an object, the Pedersoli .50 Scout Carbine weighs 6 pounds with a 13.5" LOP but costs $775, or $590 as a .45 or .50 kit from Dixie.
It's a lot like the TC Seneca. --->>> PR3095 Pedersoli Scout Carbine - .50 Cal. Perc..
Kit: --->>> PK3315 Pedersoli Scout Carbine Kit .50 Caliber Percussion

Along with some of the others mentioned, if Dixie still sells their ‘Cub’ it would be a good choice too.

My Wife is 5’11” and will be hunting with a side lock this year. I tried to steer her toward the .54 Renegade but she liked the White Mountain better. First three shots...

I dated a gal that was 5'11"......I was a little intimidated at first but spoke about it with a friend who straightened me out. We never went shooting but she seemed rather impressed that I was a gun owner.

Shortest I ever went out with was 4'11"......BIG height difference! So how tall are you Imacfrog?

36 years together and five kids? GREAT!

I've never so much as been engaged (until now) and mine is 5'2". I have called her "my Asian Doll" a few times.

I sure hope she takes to shooting like I have.

I'll try to post one of her airgun groups.

So how about a Seneca? These are still available second-hand and seem to be a smaller, lighter rifle. In .45 caliber it would kill a deer easily.

You may look to a ‘boys rifle’.
A custom company like Track of the wolf, pecotonic TVM, or sitting fox can supply the parts to make a ‘poor boy rifle’ or barn gun.
such a gun can be assembled very easy with out a toe and butt plate, entry thimble, nose cap or side plate. And a good lock can easily be fired with out a double set trigger.
These guns can be made with a short barrel. While not HC to have a short SMR no one, even the ‘stitch counter’ with a magnifying glass, is going to raise a little question over a small person having a gun that fits.

I am a full foot taller than her; 5’ 9” ish. She is a little Spitfire of French descent! Lol

It’s a shame Mongrel over on Traditional. Muzzleloading on the Cheap isn’t still makin’ his “rugrat” rifles. They were geared towards youths and ladies and his prices were hard to beat.

Foot taller than yer woman? That is wild sir! I'm 5'9" also. I find shorter women to be more attractive than taller ones. All things equal, I'll always choose the shorter one. Sounds like you are a very fortunate man.

Yes there is a need for high quality, affordable everything!

If youre not going the custom route, I would second the recommendation for a tc seneca, or cherokee. They're getting pricey but can be found. My white Mountain carbine does pretty well with a 275gr maxi and 75gr of 3f. It's not soft on the shoulder though.
