Could someone tell me which end of the lock is the tail and which end is front and which is back.
Thanks for any info.

The tail is the back of the lockplate. (The back is towards the shooter, the front is towards the muzzle).
It can vary from being a "rat tail" like the Bedford style locks to the rounded shape of a Manton or Leman.

IMO, this is one area of the lock that can give a hint at to the styles age. The older locks tails were often pointed while the later designs were rounded.

Thanks Zonie..I kinda thought that was it..but wanted to make extra sure. I'm trying to layout my Buck's Co. using RCA #1 and one of the dimensions used is "J" width of stock at tail of lock.
I'm drawing what I want on a freeware CAD program..I did that with the Virginia I did and it helps get familiar with what's going on. Although I had a Hershel House drawing to go by with it. I'm using the Virginia DWG, RCA's pictures, my built Virgina and my imagination..all this while still awaiting my precarve from Peca. which will change everything.
