Next time I pick up some old table knives from the Goodwill, I'll try hanging them over vinegar. It would be interesting to see what that does. :hmm:

I had read that the chromium combines with the oxygen the atmosphere to form a thin layer of chromium oxide, and that layer is what prevents the steel from rusting. If you scratch the surface of the steel, the chromium will immediately recombine with the oxygen and repair the chromium oxide layer. I had tried to scar the metal surface in salt water, keeping it out of the air and allowing the chloride salts to work on the steel, but I didn't have much success. I think you would have to have more controlled conditions than I have in my garage. Oh well...
