Tall Safes?

Greetings,

Looking for recommendations for a safe for the 46" barreled muskets. I've seen a few online that seem tall enough, but would like to hear from folks that actually have them in use.

The only safe that appears to be tall enough for M/Ler would be Pendleton. But their prices are sky high. All others are only designed for modern firearms.

Some larger capacity safes will work if you lean those long ones at an angle. My big old Browning safe allows long guns to do this. Does limit capacity but it works. My others are less capacity, won't work. Alternating muzzle up and muzzle down helps, too.

A buddy, long deceased, got rid of his bilco door to pour a concrete patio slab on the back of his house. He replaced the old door in the basement with a heavy steel one, put in a dehumidifier and painted the walls/floor/slab/concrete steps with waterproofing compound. Stored lots of toys in there with no problems.

I personally feel you are only buying half a safe if it is not fire rated.

Even with a fire rating that does mean much at times. I live in the country and for response time, they might get here in 45 minutes if I was home to call them. To fight a fire, they would have to fight it off the truck, no fire main in the woods. An involved house fire, the truck does not have enough water on it.

I got a 6 foot Champion, the lower shelf has cutouts along the ends that allow for extra long rifle/shotguns to be put along the outer walls of the safe. YMMV

A lot depends on how fast the response is, and just what the expectation of the fire safe is. I don't think it needs to get "fire hot" inside that safe to wreck woodwork or melt plastic.

Years back at the Phoenix gun show I ordered a Liberty safe to be extended by 12" in height for an extra hundred bucks. Took about four months to be delivered but it's been worth it. Had it extended for a 50bmg unmentionable rifle. I'm sure it would cost considerably more now if they'd even do it.

Had an excellent safe, before I got my tradegun and flinter. Neither would fit inside. Picked up a non working tall freezer, reworked the inside and added a dehumidifier (about $5 a month electricity). Since they are basically air tight to begin with. It also now holds all of my powder both smoke and smokeless. I’m a happy camper.

Only two miles from the volunteer fire company. But I pay for a monitored security system because the house could be fully engaged before anyone saw it burning. The alarms sometimes go off when I cook very energetically. It is reassuring.

Home is exposed on a hill top. Half mile off the two lane. Neighbors are good. Caring and watchful. Security system summons state troopers, not rental cops. Dog is territorial. And folks here are physical. Plenty of ex and retired military and police. The very rare burglar usually spends hospital time before jail time.
