I got to burn some black today in my newly finished .58 rifled Kibler Colonial. It was 100% for ignition and is more accurate than I'll ever be. However, it hits several inches low with unaltered sights. I had to file down the front sight significantly to get it to hit to point of aim at 25 yards. Setting it up for a six o'clock hold is not going to happen. The shots are hitting the same elevation whether rested or offhand. I need a taller rear sight (and another front, so I'm not seeing any barrel or sight base). Have any others replaced theirs? Which sights from, say, Track of the Wolf might work out? The stock front is fine, but once filed well down, it gets pretty fat.

Oh, the load that put them into a (low) ragged hole at 25 is 70 grns. FFg, .017 ticking patch and a .570 ball from a recent production, GM barrel.

Thanks!

I have the same experience with my Colonial 58, hits low. Kibler sells a taller rear sight. I bought one but have yet to install it. Been busy shooting!!

I'm going to get several rears and a couple of iron blade fronts of suitable dovetail dimensions and start out with a high set front and rear and work them down. I like a higher rise above the barrel surface anyway and it gives me a little more cheek room above the comb. I'm building another rifle and I reckon it might need the same treatment. Since I'm only target shooting with it and have no need for hunting power, I don't want to up the charge. Keeping powder burn and recoil minimized are both worthwhile goals for me with some shoulder issues.

Make your own, it is not rocket science. A vice, hacksaw, and files will make a rear sight. A Dremel is nice for the hollow out at the slot. Front sights can be one piece or two, but soldering is needed for a two piece.

That's some damn nice metal working! I could certainly do it, but it's the time I don't have with work and endless chores/repairs and a property with weeds that conspire to taunt me and my tractor every weekend.

This mythical thing called...retirement....just keeps moving farther away every day.

Because it is already fitted, I just soldered a piece of 1/16" metal on my original back sight. Then I filed it to match the exisiting sight profile but with a higher blade.

My Kibler colonial in .50 cal. hits 3" high at 25 yards , 1st flintlock I've ever had that does that !

The provided front sight is too narrow for me to shoot well. I can not see it clearly. Also, a very low front sight will cause mirage problems. The provided sights are however HC.

I always make new sights. I make the front about 0.100 or more wide. The issue rear sight has a V-notch which I do no like. I make a new rear sight with a slot that works with the new front.

If making sights is not your thing check Track or others for options.

My Kibler colonial 54 shoots great with the low sights it comes with, but I shoot a hunting load of 100 grains FFF. It seams to me you are using to light of load but I only shoot what I hunt with. Attached is shot 52-56 at 100 yards with my new Kibler percussion colonial off of a rest.
