This one is made from a RR spike, carved celtic design on the hickory handle a weeping heart, file work, turks head knot handle stop, brass tacks, tooled leather wrap.

They can be hard to cut through with just a chizle! and I have done that, but I dont do it that way any more, I mark out a line in the center of the spike and punch some marks for my....dare I say it...drill press, I know cheeting  but it gives me a centered line of holes that I then connect with a chain saw file, then smooth out the sides with a flat file, that way I'm not scwooshing the sides down cutting into it. I can then forge out and drift for the handle.

No, I dont blame you at all. RR spikes are a pain. If the cut is the tinest bit off it wont drift staright. Im sure you know what Im talking about. Ive messed up more spike hawks than anything else Ive done in the past  I like your press idea, what size bit are you using??

I think its a 3/16th. I use the smallest chain saw file I could find also, I dont want to remove
to much steel, just enuff to make a 1 1/4" slot I open it up with a small drift made from an old chizle I ground smooth and rounded off the sharp corners, then move to a modified ball peen hammer to open up some more and finish off with my drift for the handle.
