Hi
I have found three things that have the most to do with these working. One Find the best and most powerful caps .Not so easy to do. American West and Super Bang work ok.Two You need the right nipple .The ones with a bigger flash hole work best. The knight red hot nipples have larger flash holes. After firing, the flash hole can become obstructed. This is easily cleared with a pick.Three A good strong hammer hit improves success. Two of my rifles have strong hammer hits and work good with the home caps. Two others I have don't like the home caps .They both have weaker hammer springs.

I’m with Schmidt

My #1 would be, “You need the right nipple .The ones with a bigger flash hole work best.”
If I glue the caps in place I use Mucilage to do it.
Never had any trouble at all using Schmidt’s way, works great.
I don’t make them, too much time, but I can if needed.

I do have one gun, that only uses cap gun caps to fire, a R.M.A.C. black powder,
muzzleloader, .22 caliber rifle.

thanks for the site information. With the price of caps going up so high; And with my wife and daughter both chemists I have been thinking about making my own caps. I was thinking more in line with a chemical primer rather than the paper caps.

i've had one in my basement for years, along with a zillion caps (wonder if they're still good...) and a bunch of aluminum cans.

to cut to the chase, i'll come down with the general consensus: they work OK, but they're a lot of time and it's very labour- intensive.

i haven't had the hangfire or misfire problems that others have, and i just stuffed the caps in (no glue). good to know i'm not completely S.O.L. when the lefties get around to banning percussion caps, so while i don't use it very often, it wasn't money wasted.

(if it goes 'bang,' can it possibly be 'money wasted???')

I got one when I was stationed in Spain because percussion caps were hard to get. Flintlocks were OK for the Spaniards to own but caplocks were more controlled and caps were treated like ammo, ie, limited number can be purchased. Anyway, Tap O Cap worked but I sure am glad I can get CCI, Remington, etc at the local store. Not really worth the effort when the real things are available. My Tap O Cap is in a box somewhere...
