Target Pistol

Needing some advice. I am looking to start pistol shooting at places like Friendship. Any advice on a percussion single shot pistol that would make a good target pistol?

Traditions Trapper is nice. .50 caliber. Double set triggers. 1:20 twist that's suitable for petroleum based bullet koozies. 10.5 inch barrel I believe.

Two members on here agree that the JW Booth style Derringer makes a great target pistol and all around personal defense gun.

For a traditional target pistol there are a number from Pedersoli that should be considered. The Lepage, Kuchenreuter Mortimer and Mang are used to win medals in Europe and in the US.

For non-traditional styles a Yazel, 10 Ring or others work well: many are based on 1911 frames, and Friendship is a good place to see what top competitors use and also to purchase them.

Target shooting with a pistol is a demanding discipline and while the most expensive equipment is not needed to compete, quality equipment is necessary to win.

There are several pistol disciplines at Friendship and allowed under NMLRA rules. I suggest you look at those rules (available online) and pick the one, or more, that suit yer fancy. Then go shopping. You did ask for a single shot perc. You have already been given suggestions. FWI, the finest ml pistol I have ever shot was a loaner Ky. style. It was an extension of my arm. Beautiful.

I have a 45 Jukar (not target pistol) which shoots very well, but is not as nice as this Pedersoli. I would for sure check Pedersoli out if I were looking for a target pistol.
I am not speaking from past use, just brand and appearance.

I could spend $1400 but looking more at an entry level type of pistol. Not looking to become the next world champion, more than likely just for fun with a little not so serious competition.

I shoot a pistol match at Friendship on the primitive range. Match 612. Any Old Muzzleloading pistol. They allow one or two hand hold. It is a re-entry match. I have used a .45 cal . TC Patriot pistol. I have also used a Traditions .32 cal. Crocket pistol. The .32 cal. holes are hard for me to see at 20-25 yards. No scopes in primitive. It is a medal match and sometimes I win, but mostly it is fun. Friendly people in primitive.

A patriot would be a good starter pistol I would wager although I got no experience with competing.

You might consider a percussion revolver. It can be used as a single shot pistol in percussion matches at Friendship and in revolver matches--two pistols in one. I recommend a Remington by Uberti or Pietta in .36 or .44. With no modifications it can be used in "as issued" matches as well.

I really like Pedersoli Charles Moore, I have both Flint and percussion. French triggers.

I currently shoot my Traditions Trapper .50 percussion the best of my available pistols, but I also shoot any of my CVA Mountain Pistols (.45 & .50) pretty well too. I have a T/C Patriot but do not shoot it well, may be me but I got discouraged and tossed it back in the safe. I really want to move to a flint pistol but so far all I have are Tradition Trappers (.45 & .50) in flint and do not shoot them as well (nor do they work as well) as the percussion version.

Would suggest you go to Friendship next week and look at what they are shooting. If you are serious about competing in single shot percussion competition then you are looking at a custom. You won't see much in the way of traditional style pistols being used.

Let me get close enough and i'd give you a run for your money with my derringer.

Guy at our range shoots super distance. Uses a TC Contender with a scope bigger than the pistol.
