There are quite a few pistols that qualify at Friendship. Traditional both flint and percussion. Revolvers, full framed and open top. Contemporary in straight line variants and others.
In some of the geezer matches you can use two hand hold with a optic.
There are a lot of different matches requiring different guns.
The championship 1000 point match requires shooting flint, percussion and revolver.
That said you can pick any one type of handgun and have enough events to keep you busy for days.
Here is a link to a competition pistol in TOW right now.

You will find shooting in pistol competition is a wonderful discipline with many friendly folks glad to help with your endeavors.

Guy at our range shoots super distance. Uses a TC Contender with a scope bigger than the pistol.

The only Contenders I've ever seen were like mine - cartridge-shooters. I recall vividly, however, shooting mine with 500gr FN bullets - it was a .45-70 Govt, after all. With as much 3Fg as I could cram into it. It was a real attention-getter, for sure.

It seems that in spite of me not meeting up with him in King's Lynn, a fellow poster here has generously gifted me an account upgrade, for which I am not only most undeserving, but very grateful. Mr 64Springer, I thank you, Sir.

Some of us enjoy shooting vintage original pistols that are still safe to shoot.
This is a custom French officer's military pistol made in .70 cal. with fast twist multi groove rifling, it was made to shoot same sized round balls that the military infantry used in their smooth bore rifles & pistols.
Angle of the stock designs on many of the old French & English pistols makes them natural pointers & excellent competition guns.
As other members mention Pedersolli also makes a nice quality similar repro model.
This old girl is still a tack driver & the large dia. holes on the paper makes it easy for my old eyes to see :)

Not wishing to start a minor war, but that looks, to me, nothing like any kind of a military pistol. It DOES, however, look exactly like a typical target pistol of the time -

I still have my Cimmaron Lightning which is a duplicate to the one TOW is, at present, selling. The quality of the pistol is unmatched imho. Sadly, they haven't been made in years. Seems the end of the brand involved a woman(wife) and a divorce....or so I've been lead to believe.

I agree as I have a match pair of .36 cals with nine inch barrels in flint and percussion. I don't think there is any better match pistol made and there are a couple of other brands that are very good as well.
Both of mine needed some work to bring them up to full speed but I'm very happy with both of them now.

seems to me that the Yazel follows the letter of the law but not the spirit of it. that's certainly not why I got into muzzeloading. I would love to get my mitts on a Charles Moor!

I think the underhammers, like the Pedersoli Carlton or Cook are an ideal single shot target pistol design. Simple, and almost foolproof ignition - nothing to distract your vision - why couldn't an American company make something like that?

Hopkins and Allen made them over 30 years ago. They are inexpensive but I have seen shooters do well with them.
