I am the newest recruit for my club's black powder shooters that meet the last Sunday of the month for a low key competition. I am getting a new .50 target rifle with Creedmore sights to replace the Remington 700 .54 I have been shooting. I feel like the guy at the chicken fight with a duck! Everyone has been nice and helpful so I keep turning up like a bad penny. This is new to me although I have shot smallbore and shotgun competitively before. I like the laid back group, but I am trying to catch up with some folks that know a lot more than I do. Any suggestions? We shoot 25, 50 and 100 yards, offhand.

Dry fire, dry fire, dry fire.

Find out what targets they use (NMLRA?) and get the dimensions so you can set your sights up accordingly.

Dry fire some more.

Great advice on the dry firing. Don't forget to swap out the flint with a piece of wood to save some pennies, and wear and tear

Seeing as this was initially posted in the percussion rifle forum, I figure the rifle is not a flintlock. It can still be dry fired but a nipple protector should be used so the nipple isn't deformed. I have used a small round ball, leather and old style faucet washers.

BTW welcome to the forum Drilldoc.

Practice! Find a good accurate load first and then practice. Don't expect to be the top guy starting out, but after a year or two you will be competitive. The guys you shoot with will give you lots of good advice as well as the guys here.

not really sure what you're asking...but if you are wanting to get good/better with your new gun, schedule alot of alone time with it in the near future, and DO stick around here, it'll provide you with many answers to your soon to be many questions!

I'm surprised someone hasn't suggested that you spend $20 for Dutch Schoultz's Papers on "Black Powder Accuracy". You will find that his program will get you to wringing the best accuracy from your new gun.

I'm glad they haven't, its getting to be a pain to see it hawked all the time like its the Holy Grail or something which it is not. :slap: .

Heres the best advice. You ready its fail proof, if you follow it you will win. DON'T MISS your welcome. :rotf:

It works, you kept practicing spelling "practice" until you got it right! :rotf:

Much as I appreciate the variou positive comments about my System I agree with armakiller and semi sane as I am getting a bit tired of seeing all the time as well.
So thanks and stuff but lets give it a rest.
I think I mat discontinue comments on the Form as well as that seems to irritate some folks as well

Apologetically,

Dutch Schoultz

Grenadier,
Thank you for spelling my name correctly.
They have, rather endlessly been promoting my System to where I am getting tired of seeing it.
I have asked them to give it a rest because others have complained about it as well.

Have I sent you my eBook?

If not, contact me via

[email protected]

And I'll send it along to you.

Some complain about everything! So What. There are a whole bunch of us that use your system and appreciate the effort that you put into it.

"I feel like the guy at the chicken fight with a duck!" :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

I love it! Can I steal, or at least borrow, it? There are some truly delightful similes and metaphors that pop up on this forum.

Dutch's documents are worth the read. Its a bit all over the place if you ask me but if you read all of it, it will give you something to think about. As a fellow newbie I can agree that offhand accuracy takes LOTS of practice. My first shoot this summer, I was flanked by a 70 year old guy and a 50 year old guy who both have been shooting for 30+ years and were MOST impressive. Just about everyone had a different rifle and did things differently than others. Some cut at the muzzle, some did not. some pre-measured powder, others didn't. 29 caliber - 58 caliber.
I started my first event to compete against myself and improve myself and my skills at offhand shooting. If I thought I'd catch up to those folks, I'd just be disappointed and frustrated in the short term.
