I am looking at one at a local gun shop its a 54 cal and is kind of dirty on the out side bore is clean has anyone had any field experiences or good loads by the way the price is 200.00 without haggling thanks for your thoughts

A little on the pricey side. I bought one like new for $125. Have seen several real nice all under $175. They are a decent gun. I bought this one as a loaner.

Thanks that is good to know if I decide to get it I will work on getting price down I am looking for a GPR but havent found one in a shop around here yet

Have only dealt with a .50 but it is one of the two we use fo the twice a year shoot with teenagers. We go through about 100 kids a day for 3 days and in 8 to 10 groups all day. At lunch we slosh them out with soapy water and then some clean water and let them dry while we eat. This and a Blueridge just keep on humping along with the odd new nipple as they flatten down. I"d say they stand up very well.

I have had one in .50 for years. It is a great gun. I bought it originally to use for the 10 day ml season in SC. I learned that real bp and prb are the way to go. It was my gateway drug, now I am in full addiction. I still hunt with it on rainy days. Mostly use it to introduce young people to the sport.

I've got a couple in .50 Both bought NIB as old stock; paid $200 each. One has the TC tang peep sight and has taken deer. It's also a great little plinker.

For deer I shoot Maxi-Hunters over a lubed felt wad and 90 gr. Pyrodex RS. Accuracy is a bit inconsistent with the Maxis, but they thump the deer good.

For plinking I shoot a .490 PRB over 30 gr. Pyrodex P using a .010 patch. Easy to load, stays accurate all afternoon without swabbing, and the patches look good enough to use again.

I Particularly like to use mine for hunting in bad weather or if there's a lot of snow falling off the trees. There's nothing for the moisture to damage. Compact, carries nicely, and cleans up easy after shooting. One of the handiest guns I own and a favorite in the woods.

Have one in .54 and .50. Both great guns that shoot amazingly. $200 is way to high unless new in the box. Look close at the barrel...its a "Grey Hawk".

Have a .50 cal. Good gun.I would probably pay 200.00 if the bore was in good shape.

Mine's a 50 and I have had great service out it. I've killed several deer with it over the years. It's lighter than my hawken and is easy to maneuver while sitting in a tree. I used maxi balls in mine (they makem big hole). The thing I like about it the most is that the stainless is easy to keep clean. I switched to a flintlock 4 years ago so one of my boys will get it in a couple of years.
