My percussion Thompson Center Hawken was giving me trouble today and I tried to remove the small slotted screw that's closest to the nipple by the breach end of the barrel. Well the little guy just let me shear the "ears" off of the slots and refused to move. Does anyone know what size this little guy is? Looks like I'll have to drill it out and get a replacement. I think I'll replace it with an Allen headed set screw. :surrender:
Thanks,
Doug

Sorry to hear that you damaged your rifle but, most folks agree that the little screw you damaged is only in there to plug up the flame channel that is drilled into the breech.
In other words, there is no reason to remove it.

That said, I think that rather than take the chance of buggering up your guns breech any worse than it is by trying to drill out the old plug, just buy some cold bluing and reblue the marred remains of the old screw and chalk up this little problem to learning.

8 x 32

But, as stated, leave it alone. Do a little file work to smooth/blend it in and touch it up with some cold blue then forget it was ever there.

Do not drill it out and re tap the hole. The hole will be wallowed out and the threads will not index to the old. The result is the new screw will likely blow out and possibly injure the shooter to you right.

10-32TPI will be to large for the breech.
