Does anyone know the twist in a New englander 50 cal ? Most posts I've seen people say the NE is very acurate with PRB.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Thanks -- good information.
Wonder what results people have with conicals in the New Englander ?

What do you mean by "short conical". About all I'm familiar with is TC Maxi Ball and Maxi Hunter.

I have two sizes of T/C maxi hunters in .50 that I bought.
The short one is 275 grains and it isn't much longer than it is wide. So it can stableize in the 1:48 twist. I can hit my targets and get something that resembles a group.
The longer ones are 370 grains and they are about twice as long as they are wide. The 1:48 twist isn't fast enough in the modest powder charges I use.

lee r.e.a.l. bullets/molds are also available. they come in two weights per caliber. in the lighter weight they are kinda like cynthialee says-not much longer than they are wide. they're what i generally shoot in roundball twist guns & they do pretty good for me.

I don't even shoot my conicals since the guys here talked me into trying patched round balls. My acuracy is much better with a prb than with the conicals. Now if I ever get my hands on a fast twist drop in barrel for one of my rifles I will dig out the conicals and give them anouther go.

Have the same rifle as yours.
80 gr. of 3f BP
Over powder wad ( cloth or fiber)
490 RB with a .015 lubed patch
3 inch group at 75 yds.
Haven't tried the Lee "REAL" bullet yet.

Thanks Cynthialee and the others for the good information. Looking forward to makin' smoke with the New Englander.

leatherbark is right in the money. I have the same rifle.Conicals never did shoot good in mine no matter the size. Those plasticthings and PB do ok as long as I keept down to about 70grns of powder. PRBs are your bestbet but stillkept down to around 70grns.

... will shoot pretty accurate with a tight patch/ball as long as powder charges are kept down to probably 70 grains or less.

And will shoot accurately with powder charges up to 90 grs or so. You may not like 90 grs but the New Englander will not mind. Maybe why some folks don't do well with heavier loads. Might not be the gun at all. :hmm:

80 gr 3f Diamondback black
Felt wad lubed with T/C BoreButter
Lee 250 gr REAL lubed with BB

5 Shots at 100 yds

Here are a couple at 75 yds. same loads.

The heavy T/C 370 gr shoot just a hair larger.

That is impressive 100 yard shooting. Is that off hand with a New Englander ?

Both you and Vearl refer to over powder wads. He for RB and you for conical. Over powder wads are new to me for either. Are wads home made or purchased ?

Sure do learn a lot from this site !!!

Its a way to try to improve the gas seal between powder and projectile.. Some say it dosnt matter, I say it dosnt hurt.
