Hi all. So I have just a quick question that hopefully someone could kindly help with. I am in process of looking for a scope mount for my TC New Englander in 54 caliber. Someone may have one available from his old New Englander in 50 caliber, but I was just concerned that the outer diameter of the barrel might be different. So, would anybody here have a .50 caliber barrel they would be willing to measure for me for comparison? Thank you in advance for your time.

the barrel diameters are the same. if ya find the T/C factory mount it will fit either the 50 or 54 cal New Englander.

Thank you. Now to google what the mount really looks like. I had seen a picture of one, but my barrel is not drilled and tapped the same as the mount I saw. At least I have something to now go by.

T/C factory scope mounts use the rear sight holes & a D&T third hole in the top of the breechplug right in front of the tang.

Ok. That is definitely what I got to thinking after some more research. Below is a picture of my New Englander in which I think was just drilled and tapped to use whatever bases the gentleman had on hand. If someone could please confirm this, I would greatly appreciate it. Each set of holes are spaced 1/2" apart, and the distance between both of the outermost holes are spaced at 3.8". Thank you.

UM..., that looks like a different set-up. (iirc) the TC mount has three, not four tapped holes.

That looks to me like it was made for an after-market base..., Weaver offers for the New Englander a #408 base that has multiple holes, and I'd bet that was what it once used. That base needs an "adaptor" 9957 adaptor according to Midway USA's website.

OR the owner could have simply had a gunsmith check through scope bases, probably shotgun bases, until he found a pair that matched the contour of the barrel, and used those. I have an Israeli Mauser with a scope mounted forward of the receiver and the smith had to use such bases to match the contour of that barrel for me.

Thanks for the link. The bases are what I would like, just that the $20 USD shipping is a bit much for my blood right now. The bases are a good deal though. I will probably wait till our next gun show and see if I can locate a used set of bases there. Thanks again for the link.

I would carry the barrel into the nearest gun shop or sportin' goods store & buy whatever 5 or 10 dollar set of Weaver type mounts that fit the hole spacin' & the rings of my choice to go with them.
