I'm getting a headache reading this. Go get a 1/4 in bolt and a 5/16 nut, does the bolt fall through the nut the same as your vent and barrel? if so get a 5/16 vent the right thread.

Bowjock, have you measured the new touchhole? Don't see how a 1/4 x 28 can fall through .250.

Yes Buckslayer I have. It is definitely 1/4 x 28. And the top of the bevel also measurers .250. I know to some none of this makes any sense. Trust me. I had my Dad go out with me this morning and showed him what I was talking about. Taking a set of calipers, and measuring the diameter of the hole/threads in the barrel, we both came up with .250. When you put the liner in, it goes right down in the hole into the barrel and I can then dump it out through the muzzle end. I know it does not make sense, and it has drove me nuts. But it does. I tried to take a 5/16 tape and see if it would go in the hole in the barrel and it will not without drilling the hole out larger. A 1/4 x 28 tap will catch enough thread that I can not pull the tap out the hole, but can unscrew it. I have no other method of measuring the threads other than the calipers. The hole as is right now, will not take the 1/4 x 28 and is too small for a 5/16. Very few treads are visible looking down into the hole, almost like they were stripped out an not much left. Best thing for me to do is seek a gun smith on all this.

I tend to agree.

If the existing hole (the thread minor diameter) actually measures in the range of .252-.265, the thread is most likely a 5/16-18 UNC.

That is the size of the 5/16-18 minor diameter per the book.

All the more reason to go to a hardware store and buy a 5/16-18 (course thread) and a 5/16-24 (fine thread) bolt and then try to screw them into the barrel.

If only finger pressure is used, the hole won't get damaged.

You can pass a 1/4 inch bolt, threads and all through a 1/4 inch hole. If you drill a 1/4 inch hole you must tap it to 5/16" The outside diameter of the bolt is 1/4 inch so if the hole measures 1/4 it follows that the bolt will fall through.

This will all come to an end soon. The gun is in the gun smiths hands. He will figure it all out and get it fixed. No more headaches.

I finally got an answer back from TC. This model is no longer made, and they have very few, if any parts available for them. The "Nipple" as they called it is a 1/4 x 28 thread for those that needs to know. I have it at a gun smith now and they are drilling it out to accept the 5/16 x 24 replacement torch hole. Will have it all back together this week end.

Got the barrel back today on the Renegade. New torch hole installed, all put back together, and ready to go make some smoke. Let's hope it all comes together.

It's a little late, to respond to this now. However, the TC touch hole liners that are 1/4-28 have a flange, that keeps them from being screwed all the way in to the bore.
Another, thing that I seem to remember about TC's, and I'm not 100% sure on this is. I think they made a few convertible barrels, that allowed a bolster to be screwed into the barrel and used with a cap lock and converted back to a liner, to be used with a flint lock. I have not seen, such a rifle, but I'm thinking I read about it somewhere and I can't be sure if it was a TC option and special item. TC did make some round ball special barrels and other odd custom shop items.

just a FYI: a 1/4 threaded hole should measure about .201 dia. A 5/16 threaded hole should measure about .250. Those numbers are give or take a few .00x depending on the thread pitch.

So, your gunsmith ran a 5/16 tap into a hole that was already tapped for 5/16. The pitch is all he had to figure out.

I've never seen one in person but, a year or so ago there was one of the T/C conversion kits you speak of for sale on evil-bay. it was new in the package & consisted of the drum to screw into the flash-hole & the lock with cut-out for the drum.
