Was talking to a fellow who shot flintlock competition for quite awhile. He said using Teflon ticking he shot one hole groups at 50 yards. His procedure was to SLIGHTLY dampen a cleaning patch and swab with both sides between shots. Anyone here use or ever try Teflon patches?

I have, in the past, they seemed to work pretty good. Ya definately have ta wipe between shots. I used Dupont teflon spray lube from the auto parts store and pillow ticking. Just hosed the ticking real good on both sides and let it dry for a few minutes. I don't know if its the same as the teflon patches you buy or not, but it works and sure is cheaper.. :v

Yeah, it's great, but you do have to clean between EVERY shot. Competitive target shooter like the because they offer consistency and elements another variable in the loading process: thickness of patch, type and amount of lube, etc.
Cost and whether or not you need it should factor into your decision.... it's $20 a yard and can you really tell a difference if you shoot offhand? Bench shooter love it.

I just threw all my Teflon cooking pans out, I'm now glad I did. Thanks for the info.

It's harmless if swallowed after it's cured on the pans. It passes right thru you.

 One more thing . Not only does the commercial teflon patching work just fine, it also removes the edge from a patch knife like cutting paper. keep the ceramic bone handy.

I'm just wondering what auto parts store you found the spray in? I tried AID Auto Barn Auto Zone and three or four small independents and came up with zilch.
The only thing I found was Zep 45 with teflon.
Just curious. :hmm: Thanks, Kevin

Thanks everyone for the information. Think I'll stick with good 'ole regular ticking and natural-type lubes :winking:

Greetings Dixie Flinter,

I have been using Teflon coated patching for close to 30 years; mostly for competitive shooting. but also for hunting. It is great anyway you look at it.

You will never use a patching material that loads as slick and easy as the teflon coated material. At the range or at a match, I always wipe the bore between each round. That practice maximizes accuracy. I dampen a cleaning patch with Hoppe's 9 Plus or Black-Solve (my favorite). The patch is run up and down the barrel 3 times on each side.

The rifle is then loaded in the usual way. In the hunting field, you can shoot at least 3 rounds without wiping the bore. Are you going to be able to 3 shots at a game animal before it runs?

The teflon patching will also allow you to load a tighter ball (bore size) and patch combination to maximize accuracy.

The Teflon does not affect the cutting edge of my patch knife any more than any other patch lube.

Do yourself a favor and try the teflon coated patch material. Those who give it a fair trial never seem to regret it.

For more information about this material, you can check some of my previous postings.

Best regards and good shooting,

John L. Hinnant
