I would think 36 would work. Not sure if you could find a 32 if you're looking for a rifle specifically. I hunt squirrel with a 62Cal smoothbore. Essentially just a shotgun.

This is a 62.
Just killed 3 more this AM with it. Using a small caliber rifle is good practice too.

This year I saved vacation time to take off between Christmas and New Year's for late flintlock. Opening day near home in Central PA I shot a spike at 30 yards which in PA under 3" spikes is considered antlerless.
Wednesday through Friday I hunted with friends in McKean County.
I shot one first thing Thursday morning at 25 yards. I was into the deer and that's not always the case in late season.
