Well, it's early Christmas for me. On December 5, I ordered the Elizabethan Snaphaunce castings set (525) and the Early Germanic Wheelock castings set (786) along with the accompanying screw sets, from the sometimes notorious Rifle Shoppe. I verified that the sets were in stock (I'm actually not ready to tackle the wheelock, but I figured I would buy the set while it was readily available).

They arrived today. Sixteen days from order to arrival.

It looks like I really have my work cut out for me. Photos will follow.

Both kinds of lock were in use in the latter part of the Landsknecht era. My Renaissance Faire is currently set in 1555 which falls squarely in the wheelock era and near the beginning of the use of snaphaunces.

I will keep everyone updated as I progress.

Hey, LK,
Congratulations! Both for getting the goods so quickly, and for the choice of goods. I also got my wheellock parts in about six weeks. I did not know at the time that a screw set was available. I had to choose screws from any where I could. Enjoy your projects. They will keep you entertained for a while. Have fun. I can't wait to see the pictures.
YAHWEH bless.

Looking forward to seeing this.... you done yet? :winking:

I'm really sorry about the Dutch matchlock. I really think that the trick of dealing with TRS is only ordering what they have in stock.

These are the raw lock castings and screws for the Elizabethan Snaphaunce. In all, they weigh about 13.5 oz.

These are the raw lock castings and screws for the Early Germanic Wheelock. The photo is taken from a greater distance--these castings are huge and weigh a total of 2 lbs. 15 oz. So my guess of 3 lb. was not too far off. How much will this gun weigh when it is done?

Anyway, there is a lot of work to do.

All depends on the barrel as well as the lock. Keep us posted on your progress.

I think TRS would do me a favor if they didn't send me the parts I asked for. Man, my sanity would suffer irreperable damage if I ever tried to assem a lock from that! :youcrazy:
My hats off to ya Landsknect for even thinking about it!:hatsoff:

You and me both, brother!
Landsknecht, you're a better man than I...good luck. :)

Yes Landsknecht,
there really is a Santa Claus!
And you hit the nail on the head - order whats in stock when its in stock!

Merry Christmas everyone!

I am still trying to identify what all the parts do and how they go together--there are more of them than I would have expected.

Thanks for the good luck wishes--I'll need it. :)

I am planning to order:
ENGLISH SNAPHAUNCE, ENGLISH LOCK, MILITARY, ENGLISH LOCK WITH WHEELLOCK SHAPE, GERMAN MATCHLOCK, GERMANIC WHEELLOCK AND ENGLISH
by McCrory, R. H.

Has anyone seen this book? Is it as useful as its description makes it out to be?

WEll you can plainly see that the hicky-madooger hooks up to the thingy-mabob and that is attached to the whatchamacallit. :rotf: I'll see if I can dig anything up for you, somewhere I thought I had a better discription of how to assemble those things.
