OK, I've been shooting percussion rifles for quite a while. I've not needed a use for a pistol as I have only used my guns for hunting.

With an updated shop in my garage and winter coming upon us, I'm thinking it might be time for a kit pistol. Any suggestions for a nice kit (budget) percussion pistol.

I'd like the metal in the white, and hopefully some wood that will at least finish up nice.

Thanks!

You could check out some of the kits Deer Creek sells. It helps to have the bore the same size as the rifle so only one size ball needs be carried. Some kits have belt hooks but I prefer a holster to protect the pistol. With a belt hook the gun is very exposed.
Some mountain men had percussion rifles and flintlock pistols. They may have wanted the flint lock to start fires.- just a thought.
PS- a lot of kits have oversized sights that don't look that good- replace them with small sights- a lot of originals had very small sights.

On the wood...I think Deer Creek uses beech on the pistols. If you want to checker, etc a walnut stock would be better.

I saw this picture of a finished kit. The builder did a good job. I like how he polished the barrel and the color of the stock would be similar to my rifles. Not to sure about the side plate finish.

Not so say this is the kit I want but rather the fish I would like to end up with. I would definitely keep it to a .45 or .50. Eventually I'd like to have two identical and then make a presentation case.

Looks to be a CVA, By the sights. Check some of the local gunshows. I know one table that will have a few completed pistols and a kit or two in Centralia on the 15-16 Nov. Where in WA are You located?

North. I'm looking for a kit to do this from scratch. What I lack is the ability to inlet so I'm going to be stuck with kit projects for now.

Any idea if the metal is in the white or is it already blued?

yeagers in bellingham has a kit or 2 in stock. and wholesale sports might be worth a call to see what they have. mail order try pectonica river

Thanks! I'll stop by Yeagers and fondle one to see the fit and finish.

BTW, what is the proper finish for a pistol. Bright and shiny or oiled?
