For recoil reduction, try moving the butt of your rifle away from the "pocket" of your shoulder, the modern place to seat your rifle butt. Crescent butts were intended to be moved further out on your arm away from the painful impact on joint and collar bone.
As for minimum loads, I use 30 grains all the time in 54 caliber for small game. Plenty potent, very accurate, and a maiden's kiss on the shoulder when the gun is held properly.
