Snake eyes, thats from the dealers/gunshops. Its taxed at 14% VAT at the dealers (as is any other product), but since we dont have a local manufacturer of real Black Powder, I believe the importation taxes are very heavy as well as the transportation cost from the importers to the dealers are extremly expensive. Not to mention exchange rate. The Rand isnt a strong currency and we pay just over ZAR7 for USD1. This morning the Rand was at R9.49 to the Euro and we are at R13 odd for one Pound Sterling. Dealers are only allowed to stock around 30 odd pounds (Christiaan will be able to give exact figures) at any given time, which makes for more frequent trips to and fro. Then ofcourse there is also their markup on the product, and since firearm dealers are struggling to make a living here, consumables inevitably becomes a lifeline.. The most expensive is Swiss. Going around $80 per pound.

Titus,
Amazing!!!!Got my current catalog from Graf&Sons
in yesterdays mail and it list SWISS at $18.99
per pound. Of course there is a charge here and
a charge there, but if ordered in quanity the
cost would still be well below $22 or $23 a
pound. This is not:bull: check www.grafs.com.

Snakey

One can get powder from a local explosives company, close to Johannesburg, at the following prices (based on exchange rate of ZAR7=$1):
Swiss - $73 per 500 gram
Wano - $21 per 500 gram
500gram = 1.1 lbs

They don't manufacture BP but import.

A locally manufactured substitute, called Sannadex that delivers fairly good results, goes for $21 per 500 gram.

Unfortunately we are restricted by law to 1000 gram (or 2000 gram) of BP and 1000 (or 2000) caps at any given time. (Quantities in brackets are special dispensation for persons with more than one BP firearm). Thus we cannot order in bulk to negotiate bulk discounts.

Despite all this we muzzle loaders love and enjoy making smoke.

Regards
Oscar

What oscar mentions is the other alternative to buy directly from the importers, but its sometimes (mostly) impossible for a lot of the SA guys to do so. You have to be at their offices before 12:00.

I am now with my new job in the fortunate position that they are just a few blocks away from me, but you have to budget on a large piece of the morning there when you plan on buying from them. The lethargy in that building is beyond comprehension... :snore: :shake:
