Some original Brown Bess muskets that had the stocks with more drop before the P1756 Pattern, have also been found with notches filed in the tangs/breeches. Not sure if that was done while in use in the Military during the period or later.

I think the British Ordnance Department would have frowned on that severely, when such a modified older arm was turned in for a newer arm. However, I don't have documentation on that, so I could be mistaken.
