Tips for finishing ramrod entry pipe

Anyone have any tips on finishing/polishing the ramrod entry thimble without damaging any decoration? I consistently end up buggering up the formed pattern during the filing and sanding process.

Use fine files first, then go to sandpaper wrapped around a file. Finally you can use scotchbrite or steel wool etc.

I use a magnification for 90% of any work on a flintlock project. As Jim stated, go very small with your files and sandpaper. You can also split some popsicle sticks and then glue fine sandpaper to the ends.
