1/16" works with some flintlocks. Metal doesn't grow back and the large the touch-hole the more variation you will get in breech pressures. Open only if needed. I have owned two flintlocks without liners - vents drilled directly in the barrel. I learned to be very careful what I did to those vents.

This is a 1/16" vent after 30 shots doing nothing but loading and priming - no picking, no wiping.
