Anyone know where I can buy some TOW or is it something that I probably have just lying around? Not sure exactly what it is, but it sounds like I should have a bit for fire starting and wads.

I have been buying my TOW from the Silver Shuttle lady for many years. Prices are very affordable. She is located in Memphis, TN. Ring her up at (901) 324-2878, [email protected]. Let her know it's for your muzzle loader.

I was cleaning out the attic and came across a bag of macramé supplies that belonged to my grandma.. Among them was a spool of large diameter (1/4-3/8)jute or flax twine. It pulls apart beautifully and makes very good fire tinder.... by the look and feel of it...it should make good wadding....
So the next time I'm in a craft store I have something to look for.

Avoid it for fire-starting, as it is smoky and doesn't work well (though it will work). Shredded inner cottonwood bark works better and can be found free for the taking...

BTW, tow is a by-product of flax (linen) processing. It is composed of the left-over coarse fibers and bits of stem remaining after the long fibers are harvested for spinning.

-Maven,
Same here, but I always called 'er on the land line. Might give it a try. Neat lady, and she always treated me well  of course everyone is selling TOW now, but I tend to stay with folks who do good by me. even on the lowly product of TOW

I was about to ask the same question about finding TOW - Ebay has it, but it's kinda pricey.

I just sent an e-mail out to the Silver Shuttle Lady to get pricing.

I won't buy anything from Dixie anymore - lousy customer service, lazy people on the phone, and they all but admit that they don't really care if they can help me or not. There are too many other sutlers and retailers that appreciate my business to bother with Dixie anymore. They're not the same class of company they were 30 years ago.

I think you can get it from TOW, that's track of the wolf, in case you're wondering. :haha:

I was putting together an order for ToTW last nite, and oddly enough, they didn't list TOW anywhere in their website, not in patches, wads or cleaning & the search only shows TOW worms.
