I wanted to do my own build for the first time and have been looking at the:
Isaac Haines 1770 Lancaster longrifle
special parts kit with shaped & inlet forend, 38" swamped barrel, single trigger, maple, brass.

Do you think that this would be a ok choice for a 1st time build? also what tools do you recommend that I must have? :)

I put together one of those parts sets. It went together pretty good, don't remember any major issues. Take your time and you should end up with a good result.

Good parts but you might want to ask if all items are in stock. I waited 3 months on a stock from them and then 4 months on a trigger plate which ended up being discontinued and changed to a different style.

I have built 3-4 of them. Make SURE all of it is in stock when you buy it, or you may be 6 mo getting a parts. Then make SURE they sent the right parts & correct stock after ya get it.

I prefer one from Dunlap Woodcrafts & have built a bunch of them, much nicer wood for the $ and basically the same parts. If you want a PC one, go with Chambers kit as it is more PC/HC if that is a concern. All will make ya a nice rifle.

PS: Lock Inlet First,
Then Barrel to Vent position.
Then Trigger
Then Buttplate
Etc.

the only berral in stock is the Rice Barrel Company in .50 all the rest are at accepting orders. everything else is in stock.

With shipping @ over $30. I would ask for a KISS too!!!

There has to be better shipping some where?

I would shape my own from a blank before I would pay those pirate prices! I don't care what else you can put in the box for free, It is STILL too much!

sorry about the sideways travel but the cost of shipping burns my butt!

Don't rely entirely on the "in stock" notice on the web site. Call them and go through each part number by number to confirm availability.

Tracks kits are very nice just make sure they have all the parts in stock. If not, just buy the parts they and get the rest from a diffrent supplier. I may use 4 or 5 diffrent suppliers on one gun. As for tools, :hmm: if this the only gun you plan building :rotf: (never seen anyone build just one) a 1/4"chisel, a good sharpening stone, inletting black(a must),needle files, rasp,c-clamps are cheap & handy, hacksaw, that will get you started, buy the rest as you need them. You would not believe how mush a good book will help you. Recreating the American Longrifle is the best one you can buy right now. A good book will make a difference between a OK gun and a NICE gun, what do you want to build  Good Luck AL

Thanks!!! well I plan on building a folwer next, but one step at a time. :) I don't have any tools so I am buying what I need. ;) the crazy part is my wife is supporting this adventure. I bought a tap wrench but nothing else yet. I quess I need a drill as well. for a book I bought "Art of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle"

longbow, it sounds like you don't have any tools, the best tip I can give you to get the most tools for your dollar is go to a pawn shop. Here hand tools sells for $3.00 a pound. I bought a good electric drill for $5.00. Old screwdrivers you can grind to a sharp edge for a scraper. You never know what you will find and it can change every week in a pawn shop. Buy all the files you find. Use one set for steel and one for brass. Even the rusty files Coke will clean then. Good Luck AL

yes not having tool would be correct. My friend make his own longbows and he is allowing me to use his shop, but I plan on getting my own tools as I go. thanks for the tip about the pawn shop. I will check that out.

Learn how to sharpen gouges, chisels, etc. Very important that your tools are SHARP!

If you want one Easy, just buy one Finished..... Buying one "In the White" would give you some experience on Finishing, and also let you take it apart & put it together, similar to buying a Lyman rifle kit.

But if you truly want to Build it, just buy the book, a few tools, and a set of parts & build it. Nobody said they are easy... if they were easy, everyone on this site would not be asking all of these questions & needing advice of how to get out of the pickles they get into. They take concentration, study, planning, a few tools, scill with hand tools, & determination to complete..... and for some of us, a little bit of luck comes in handy now & then as well.....

I wanted one to build to save money and thought it might be fun to build as well. after looking at tools it seems that I will spend about the same for a built rifle from TVM as I would building one myself. It looks like I have to wait six month for supplies from track of the wolf or six months from TVM. :surrender:

Also, take a look at Pecatonica River.
http://www.longrifles-pr.com/

There usually isn't that long of a wait with them.

Don't let the build intemidate you. Just go slow and ask questions. It really doesn't take a lot of special tools to build a kit.
