My cousin just bought a traditions 54 cal percusson rifle. What do you think of this rifle and how does it shoot round ball or conicals?

I just gave a Traditions Springfield Hawken in .54 cal to my wife and it shoots just fine, at least on the 40 yard range we've tried it out on so far. The wife was killing metal targets left and right with PRB. And this despite a bore that's in pretty poor condition courtesy of a neglectful previous owner, even after extensive cleaning by me...

I built a .50 Traditions Hawkens from a kit for my son-in-law. It sgoots great and accurately with round balls and conicals. The first time out the factory nipple broke in two. Replaced it with a Hot Shot nipple and no problem since. Normally, the first thing I do is to replace the nipple. You can't beat a .54 caliber

I also have a .50 Hawken with a bad bore, flea market buy. Cleaned bore best I could and killed 2 deer with it with 2 shots. It has a 1-48 twist. Only paid 75.00 for it. Nice gun otherwise. Dilly

If it is one of their "Hawken" style rifles it probably has a 1:48 rifling and will shoot both round balls and conicals well. If it has deep rifling like mine, most conicals are tough to load so I have not messed with them much.

Want to say thanks to everyone. My cousin will be happy to here the results of this post. How about a load?

I think I was using 80 grains of FFg Goex, a hornady .530 rond ball and a 20 ox yoke prelubed patch. Shot really tight.

In my .54 GPRs and .54 T/C Hawkens, I've always used .530 balls, pillow ticking patch lubed with Ballistol oil and 80 grains of FFg Goex. When I got a .54 CVA Hawkens for a friend, I started him off with the same load. No matter how much or how little powder he used, the best group was about 4" at 50 yards. I handed him a horn of FFFg Goex and his groups went to 1". You should try both powder to see which one your rifle likes best. Good luck and enjoy

I have a .45 Woodsman Hawken in .45 and a Deerhunter .45 from Traditions/Ardesa. Both shoot very well with .440 RB, .010" patch or .452 maxiballs.

Regards

Kirrmeister
