I am thinking about buying a traditions kentucky .50 pistol to deer and hog hunt with. My shots will be 40yds.and less.I would like to know what is the max.gr.of powder I can use for this gun? What will this gun shoot better round balls or conicals? Also can I get nipples for this gun to use musket caps?

The manual that came with your pistol should answer your questions. If you didn't get one try Traditions themselves. You may have too hang out in the land off hold for a while but, they will answer your questions. Also can request a manual if you don't have one. Here is there link. http://www.traditionsfirearms.com/contactUs.asp

:hmm: I know the gun quite well since I own one. I would think that ~50 grains of fffg would be all I would want to stuff in that gun. It's not a flea weight gun and has a healthy chunk of a barrel, though I don't think I would try anything heavier than that load. Now that being said, I would not recommend this but their .50 rifles are the same barrel dimensions except length and they use 100 gr. +++ for hunting loads.I just think that going over 50 gr fffg would provide too much unburned powder left in that short barrel. Like with anything that exceeds the overly cautious manufacturer's recommendations, you take your own chances when you do this. If my state permitted a "back-up" I might toy with the idea, but why look for trouble.

Thanks 50cal.cliff I went to the site and looked at the manual.Pasquenel what do you think would shoot better out of this gun.Round balls or conicals? If I were to shoot conicals what would be the max.weight conical to use?

Gote....if you shoot 50 gr in it be prepared to
Hang On! She is gonna jump! That monster load will decrease your accuracy too....they shoot Best with 25-30 grain FFF......

Thanks scalper I am going to order me one of these pistols this week. I am trying to find out all I can about them. From what I have read they seem to be good pistols.I have never shot one so I dont know what to expect from it.I have a 1851 navy that I shoot alot. It shoots very good with 30grs. I want to give the 50cal.a try on deer and hogs. It should perform very good.I have been thinking about shooting conicals in it but I dont know what weight to shoot. What would be the best? Or do I need to shoot round balls?

Gote, most pistols are set up with a slower twist and tend to shoot round balls better. I've tinkered with short conicals in them, but the round balls were more accurate. I don't have the Kentucky, but I shoot a Traditions Trapper often. It prefers 35 grains of 3f and a wad between the powder and ball. Your most accurate load in a .50 will probably fall within the 25-35 grain range.

Max load should be around 50 grains or so. If I remember right, Traditions says the max load for my Trapper should be 45 grains, but you know how conservative the makers ratings are.

If you try a conical, keep it as short as possible. The Buffalo Ball-et was designed to be shot in slower twist guns, so it might work well for hunting. I have shot them in my Trapper with decent results. Not as accurate as a round ball, but plenty accurate enough for hunting. Good luck to ya!

Dido on the roundballs. A friend has one and shoots roundballs accuratley after some experimenting with loads. He's tried a few other things, minis and slugs, No accuracy though from what he said.
I didn't have any problem with kick, I shot it like any high caliber pistol. I am right handed so, pistol in right hand, left hand under supporting and losely gripping right!

Thanks Plink & 50cal.cliff I am going to order the pistol today. If everything works out like I hope it will I should have some fresh pork chops in the freezer in a couple of weeks.

I shoot 30grains FFFG out of my Traditions .50cal, I started at 20 and moved up, I found anything over 35 grains and I start to loose accuracy.

I would post a picture but I am not sure how to as I am a noob.
