Traditions Kentucky Kit Stock Shape

Hello all. About 2 years ago I completed my kit. I got the rifle out and shot it a couple of times but honestly the stock shape and weight just takes a ton of fun out of it for me. The stock is very light and with the shape in the back it beats my face the the point of hurting pretty bad. Is there some reshaping of the stock or some way to add some weight that will not hurt the integrity of the rifle? If so I would like to see some examples so I have an idea where to start. Thanks

I can't help you with your question. Just wanted to say what a fantastic looking example of a Traditions kit! Love the color!

Yes, reshape the stock and lengthen the wrist. There’s a lot of unnecessary wood on that kit. The amount of powder you use has a large effect on recoil.

Thanks for the help. I have been loading either 40gr to 50gr of powder behind a round ball. Might get it out this weekend and just try 30gr to see if it's any fun. I would really hate to go back and start working down the stock now that I'm done with it but if I have to I will do it.

It is not a traditional shoulder mount rifle. It goes in the crook of the upper arm. Lots of guidance on various threads about how to shoulder rhese guns. Might make it better for you.

I use 35gr of 3f in my cva kentucky out to 50yds plinking at paper.

That's an extraordinarily nice looking rifle. You did a heck of a of a job finishing it. If it's no fun to shoot, then sell it to someone who's taken with it, or better yet, hang it on your living room wall as a display piece, and bask in the admiring comments from all your visitors.

So, my advice is: DON'T MESS WITH IT.

Astute observation. These rifles will hurt you if you don't shoulder them correctly.

Any of the sharp-curved butt plate rifles should be mounted and fired just on the outside of the shoulder ball (upper arm) rather than on the inside of the shoulder ball (chest side). Good looking rifle but I can't tell you yea or nay on any refinishing.

If you don't mind me asking what method and stain you used on the stock? absolutely love the color.

As others have said, how you hold the rifle against your shoulder makes a difference in felt recoil.

If you’re still looking to add some weight. You could pull the butt plate off, drill about a hole into the butt and fill with weight, then reinstall the but plate. A penny is 3/4" diameter…a very common wood drill size and a stack of pennies with a piece of thin tape down the side fits very nice without rattling. I would add a couple of patches between the weight and the butt plate.
I have done this before, I even did one unmentionable single shot slug gun with a length of copper pipe filled with lead to get even more weight.
