Triple 7 a good substitute for Pyrodex ?

Hi Pete, Welcome to the forum.

I'm sure someone will come along here and give you a good answer, but it seems it would depend on what gun you are going to be shooting this in.

IMO pellets are for in-lines, and loose powder is for caplocks with a somewhat limited use in flinters.

As far as a honest comparison of the two I don't know how you would do that as they appear to have different applications all together.

I bought my first can ever of loose T7 this year, and was pleased with it's performance in two of my cap locks, although I still prefer real black powder.

If you are shooting an inline, I suspect the pill to be the thing you may be interested in. Seems to be the thing in vogue today, although fine tuning a load has the appearance of being problematic due to the limited weights available in pellets...just guessing, as I don't know for sure.

Welcome to the forum.

Tried them all.
The best I've found is Goex.
Best accuracy, best ignition. Can't argue with results.

Triple Se7en and Pyrodex compare very close in Pellet form. Strength wise they are the same because they lowered the weight of the Triple Se7en to equal the power of the Pyrodex Pellets. So if your load was 100 grains with Pyrodex it would be the same with Triple Se7en.

In loose form Triple Se7en is 15% stronger then Pyrodex in loose form. If you were shooting 100 grains of Pyrodex in loose form then you would shoot 85 grains of Triple Se7en in loose form.

Cost wise the pellet form will be much more expensive per shot then the loose form. In fact if money is a consideration then forget the pellets and go with the loose form.

Pyrodex has a little more stink and smoke when you shoot it whether in pellet or loose form. Pyrodex also has a little more fowling but the fowling is not as "hard" as many find with Triple Se7en. I am sure you have read posts of the dreaded "crud ring." Triple Se7en burns hotter when it fires, and there seems to be a harder texture to the crud ring. Both will cause fowling, and both can be swabbed with simple water or a swab mixture. The main thing is, you do need to swab.

One thing you need to consider is some rifles do not like shooting Triple Se7en. I have two rifles that shoot excellent with pyrodex or Goex, but Triple Se7en send the accuracy crazy. I think it has something to do with the burn rate and the heat generated. I noticed with one rifle, when I shoot Triple Se7en in loose form, I have to put a wonderwad between the charge and the patched roundball or it will smoke the patch.

I think in loose form any powder is a much better deal. I also think you can custom the load much better. I also do not see the pellets as a big advantage as to loading when you can pre-measure out different loads of the loose and do about the same thing as with the pellets.

You need to try them for yourself is you are considering the pellets. Many people like them for the ease of loading. I will stick with Goex loose black powder. I do not mind the stink, fowling, or additional clean up....
